Sangmyung University is proud of its rich history, comprehensive degree programs, and successful alumni. None of this would be possible without a relentless pursuit of improvement through institutional selfreflection and change management. It is this introspective tradition that has brought the University's Seoul campus to reevaluate the direction of its general English program. We are determined for our programs to address both the immediate, local language goals (testing-oriented) and the more distant, global goals (communication-oriented). In addition, the program should be built on solid theoretical foundations in regards to English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching methods and second language acquisition (SLA) theory. To accomplish this, the ADDIE design model was adapted for systematic organizational and curricular change and applied to our educational context. This has resulted in the addition and elimination of courses, the hiring of additional faculty, the development of comprehensive standards for all courses, course-wide summative assessments, and a system for ongoing evaluation of courses, instructors, and students.

오늘날 우리는 세계화를 넘어 국경을 초월하여 상호공존을 모색하는 글 로벌 시대에 살고 있다. 글로벌 시대의 도래와 함께 사회는 대학에게 글 로벌 소양을 갖춘‘ 글로벌 인재’육성을 요구하고 있고, 좀 더 현실적 측면에서 우리 사회의 많 은 영역에서 영어 구사력을 인재선발 시 중요한 요 건으로 제시하고 있다. 본 논고에서는 이런 사회 흐름에 맞춰 경쟁력 있 는 영어구사력을 통한 글로벌 인재, 취업경쟁력을 갖춘 인재육성을 목표 로 기초교양 영어 교육을 강화, 개편한 2013년도 상명대학교 서울캠퍼스 의 교양영어교육 프로그램을 소개하고자 한다. 본 논고에서 소개될 개편 의 골자는 다음과 같다. 일반적으로 교수시스템설계에서 자주 사용되는 ADDIE(Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) 모델을 교육과정변화에 적용하여 교양 영어 교과목을 확대하고 수준별 수업을 도입하였다. 또한 각 교양영어교과목별로 표준 성취기준 (general standards) 제시하였고 학생의 표준 성취기준 습득여부를 확인하기 위하 여 동일 영어교과목을 대상으로 공통 기말고사제를 도입하여 교양영어 교 과목간의 연계성를 확보하고 이를 통하여 교양 영어교과목의 표준화을 이 루고자 시도하였다. 이와 함께 개편을 통한 기대효과를 기술하고, 상명대 학교 서울캠퍼스 미래 교양 영어교육의 방향과 개선점들을 제시하고자 한다.
