The purpose of this study is to contribute to the efficiency of the fundamental education for the first year students by proposing an instruction model which can be available to make provision for the freshman education in Korea and by suggesting some points to improve the course. For achieving this goal, this paper has tried firstly to review the literatures studying on the freshman education programs which are implemented in USA and Korea respectively. According to the research findings, some korean universities are providing the freshman with the courses in which students can partly learn and experience the basic knowledge or skills needed for the successful campus life, while the holistic and systematic courses or programs for the first year experiences are being offered in the United States. In oder to present an instruction model, it is conducted to demonstrate goals, contents, and methods which are utilized in the course. It is then followed by analysing the results of the course evaluation and the surveys conducted by students who had taken part in the classes offered one semester after another. The analysis shows that the second class is more effective in some aspects than the first, amending the contents and methods drawing on the first class participants' feedback. As a result, it is especially critical in refining a program to reflect the students' perception on the course. Additionally, it is suggested that the findings in the previous literature review can be taken into the consideration to improve the fundamental education for freshman. Given the long-term development of the foundational education, it is also important to conduct empirical studies such as longitudinal research parallel with the endeavor for developing the excellent instruction models to maximize the efficiency of the freshman education programs in the korean universities.

이 논문의 연구목적은 대학 신입생들에게 적절한 교육을 제공해야 한다 는 입장을 기반으로, 실제 수업 사례의 결과를 중심으로 신입생 기초교육 의 개선 방향을 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 국내외 선행 연구 조사, 수업 사례와 수강생들의 수업에 대한 반응 자료 분석, 개선을 위한 제언 등의 방 식으로 고찰하였다. 신입생 대상 교육 관련 자료들을 검토한 결과, 미국에 서는 역사가 깊고 보편화된 반면에 한국에서는 신입생을 위한 체계적인 기초교육은 도입 단계에 있는 것으로 나타났다. 수업 사례를 소개하기 위 해 두 학기의 수업에서 사용한 목표·내용·방법 등을 제시하였으며, 각 수 업 후 실시한 수업평가와 설문조사 결과를 분석한 결과, 개선을 위해 노력 한 두 번째 수업의 결과와 평가에서 긍정적인 방향으로 변화한 것을 볼 수 있었다. 이에 따라, 향후 개선을 위해서는 수업에 참여하는 학생들의 의견 이나 수업에 대해 평가한 내용을 면밀히 검토하여 수업을 설계하는 데 적 극적으로 반영할 필요가 있음을 제안하였다. 여기서 제시된 내용들은 신 입생 기초교육을 위한 국내 대학들의 수업모형 개발에 부분적으로 기여 할 수 있을 것이다. 한국 대학의 신입생 기초교육이 제대로 정착하려면 종 단 연구를 통한 경험 연구를 수업 운영과 병행하는 것도 고려해 볼 수 있겠다.
