The purpose of this study is to survey the current situation of teaching speaking and writing in the Catholic university of Daegu, and to present the better prospect of the teaching. The knowledge convergence society in the 21st century requires people with the competency of creative problem-solving, the competency of communication, and the character and quality to be equipped with as a world citizen. In this context, universities are aggressively reflecting the needs in our society, and reorienting the educational direction. Teaching speaking and writing is reinforced in that especially, the ability fostered in the course of speaking and writing coincides with the ability needed in knowledge convergence society. Accordingly, various speaking and writing programs are provided in universities. The speaking and writing programs in universities are classified into 3 categories. The first type is a separation type where speaking and writing are taught separately, and the second is a parallel type where speaking and writing are taught together as one subject, and the third is application type where writing is the main part and speaking is utilized in the form of presentation and discussion. Falling into the second category as a parallel type, a regular subject under the title of “Writing and Speaking” is provided in the Catholic University of Daegu. Developed by the Catholic University, it self, its textbook is comprised effectively for strengthening the competency of communication by studying the theory and practice for 15 weeks. In addition to regular programs, writing contests, discussion competitions, and intensive speaking and writing courses provided in vacations, 1:1 writing tutoring service, writing guiding classes, and special lectures by invited speakers are held to increase students’ competency of communication. Like this, the regular programs and extra curriculum interacts with each other, and teaching speaking and writing in the Catholic University of Daegu are producing synergy effect. However, such matters as the reduction in number of students in class, introduction of intensive subjects as a regular program, WAC(writing across curriculum) should be considered for the better education.

이 글의 목적은 글쓰기와 말하기를 한 교과목 안에 배치해서 교육하고 있는 대구가톨릭대학교의 교육 현황을 살피고 더 나은 전망을 제시함으로써 글쓰기와 말하기 교육에 관한 담론을 활성화하는 데 있다. 21세기 지식융합사회는 글로벌 리더로서의 자질인 창의적 문제해결 역량, 의사소통 역량, 세계시민으로서 갖추어야 할 품성과 자질을 갖춘 인재를 요구하고 있다. 이에 대학들은 사회의 요구를 적극 반영하고 수용하며 교육의 방향을 잡아 가고 있는 중이다. 특히 글을 쓰고 말하는 과정에서 길러지는 능력은 지식융합사회에서 필요로 하는 능력과 일치한다는 점에서 글쓰기와 말하기 교육은 강화되고 있다. 따라서 대학마다 글쓰기와 말하기 교육이 다양하게 진행되고 있다. 각 대학의 글쓰기와 말하기 교과목을 살펴보면 글쓰기와 말하기를 각각 다른 교과목으로 개설해서 교육하는 분리형, 하나의 교과목 안에서 글쓰기와 말하기를 함께 교육하는 병행형, 글쓰기를 주로 하되 발표와 토론 등의 말하기를 활용해서 교육하는 활용형 등으로 나눌 수 있다. 현재 대구가톨릭대학교는 <글쓰기와 말하기>라는 정규 교과목을 개설해서 교과목의 명칭처럼 글쓰기와 말하기 교육을 병행하고 있다. 자체 개발된 교재는 15주 동안 이론과 실습을 통해서 학생들의 의사소통 역량을 강화하는 데 효과적으로 구성되어 있다. 정규교과 이외에도 방학 중 무료로 개설되는 글쓰기와 말하기 심화과정, 글쓰기센터에서 운영하는 1:1 글쓰기 첨삭지도, 글쓰기 공모전, 토론대회 등을 통해서 학생들의 의사소통 역량을 키우는 데 힘쓰고 있다. 이처럼 대구가톨릭대학교의 글쓰기와 말하기 교육은 정규교육과 비정규교육이 상호작용을 하며 시너지 효과를 내고 있는 중이다. 하지만 더 나은 교육을 위해 수강인원 감축, 정규교과로서 글쓰기와 말하기 관련 심화과목의 개설, 전공글쓰기와의 연계 등에 대한 문제를 적극 고려해야 할 것이다.
