The purpose of this paper is to investigate out aspects and characteristics of Kim Yun-shik’s understanding of China. Kim was an envoy sent to the Qing dynasty in 1881-1882, and he conferred with government officials of the Qing dynasty about treaty with the United States. In those days the status of China in the world order was changing, and then the Qing dynasty was a nation state like any other countries. In particular the modern treaty with the Western countries represented and confirmed that changing situation, so there was a possibility that Kim’s understanding of China had changed in those times. This paper have examined his diary, Umcheongsa(陰晴史) and his collection literary works, Unyangjip(雲養集) for this reason. It is well known nowadays that Kim had accepted the subject satae theory forced by Lǐ Hóngzhāng. But in a sense it could be said that the theory could be accepted without repulsion, because it could meaned a establishing special relationship between Korea and China in the modern world order, public law of all nations(萬國公法) system in Kim’s thought point of view. Based on this specific perspective Kim observed and described the social reality of the Qing dynasty, so the manner and sight that he taken to express the phenomena and problem of contemporary China were different from that of his foregoer. Subject matters that he critically described in his diary and works were foot-binding, opiumism, split of public sentiment, inaccuracy of journals, and so on. Those were not frequently treated in works written by foregoing authors in the envoy-journey period. And his diary and works were not exposed the feeling that the Qing dynasty is barbarian dynasty and so cannot be a successor of Chinese culture, it can be pointed out a distinct feature of his understanding on ‘real China’. Finally the image of China in his works was floating from that of the empire control the medieval east Asia to that of one nation-state in the world. But it is also true that he accepted China-Qing as a special country which could lead Korea-Joseon well to a new world.

본고는 영선사 활동 시기를 중심으로 하여 김윤식의 중국에 대한 인식의 구도와 양상을 살피는 것을 목적으로 한다. 당시의 세계 질서는 조공-책봉 체제로부터 독 립국가 간의 조약 체제로 전환하고 있었으며, 영선사 김윤식은 이처럼 중국의 위상 및 중국-조선의 관계가 변동하는 시점에 중국에서 세계 질서 재편의 과정과 중국 사회의 현실을 지켜보았다. 또 이를 통해 중국에 대한 인식을 새롭게 하였는데, 그 양상은 그의 일기인 陰晴史와 문집인 雲養集을 통하여 엿볼 수 있다. 본고에 서는 이를 몇 가지 차원에서 검토하였다. 김윤식은 이홍장이 제기한 속방론을 수용하는 경향을 보였는데, 이는 중국의 위 상이 하나의 독립국가로 변화되는 현실을 인정하면서도 조선과 중국 사이의 특별 한 관계를 유지하고자 하는 복합적인 인식의 결과로 파악할 수 있었다. 중국에 대 한 인식의 양상을 살펴보면, 객관적인 시각에서 풍속을 살피면서도 중국 사회가 겪고 있는 아편 , 개화 정책에 대한 반대, 신문의 부정확성 등의 문제에 대해서는 비판 적인 진단을 하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 특히 조선이 가까운 미래에 경험하게 될 만한 문제에 대해서는 깊은 관심을 보였다. 역사적인 맥락에서 보면, 김윤식의 중국 인식은 앞선 시기의 소중화론 또는 조선중화주의의 시각과는 달라진 면모를 보인 다고 평가된다. 즉 중국을 만주족 국가로서의 청나라로서가 아니라 조선보다 앞서 서 개화 정책을 펴는 국가의 이미지로 파악함으로써 앞선 시기의 중국 인식과는 달 라진 면모를 보여주었다고 평가할 수 있는 것이다.
