Korean Buddhist Jogye Order is the Buddhist religious body representing Korean Buddhism. Jogye Order is symbolizing the 1700 years’ history and culture of Korean Buddhism. It is natural to question the origin of identity of this Jogye order. The identity can be found in philosophy or idea of the religious body, and also in organization defined by the charter of religious body. This study is basically started from such curiosity. This paper tried to find clues from the Chief Priest system of religious body. To respond this academic curiosity, this paper made the overview of history of Chief Priest system in modern and present space, and pointed out issues and characters found in such study. The overview is as follows ; Historical flow in modern and present Buddhism, sectional Buddhism, representative right of religious body, organization management, pure disciplinant election and conflicts among sects are reflected in the history of Chief priest. The main theme of Chief priest system study is the identity, role, character, its relation with sectional conflicts and etc. Other issues are the authority distribution with the executive chief, who is practical representative in working-level, balance of interests among religious group and etc. Irrespective of the importance of Chief priest system, its academic analysis has been overlooked. Hopefully this paper can be the corner stone of academic analysis on chief priest system.

대한불교 조계종은 한국 불교를 대표하는 종단이다. 조계종단은 한국불교 1700년의 불교의 역사와 문화를 대변한다. 그렇다면 이런 조계종단의 정체성은 어디에서 찾아야 할 것인가의 문제가 제기된다. 그는 종단의 이념, 사상에서도 찾을 수 있지만, 종헌에서 규정한 조직에서도 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 본 고찰은 이와 같은 의문에서 시작하였다. 그래서 본고에서는 그에 대한 단서를 종정제도에서 찾고자 하였다. 필자는 이런 학문적 궁금증을 근현대 공간에서 전개된 종정의 역사의 개요를 정리하고, 그에 나타난 성격 및 문제점을 정리하고자 하였다. 그 개요를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 종정의 역사에는 근‧현대 불교의 흐름, 종파불교, 종단대표권 및 조직관리성, 청정한 수행자의 선출, 종단 분규 등이 흐르고 있었다. 그리고 종정제도의 문제점으로 성찰할 주제는 종정의 정체성, 역할 및 성격, 종권갈등의 연계 등이다. 그 밖의 문제는 종단 실무대표권자인 총무원장과의 권한 분배, 문중 이익과의 조화 문제 등이라 하겠다. 지금껏 종정제도에 대한 중요성에도 불구하고 이에 대한 학문적 분석이 미약하였다. 본 고찰이 그에 대한 초석이 되길 기대한다.
