This study examines the effect of female defectors’ self-esteem and economic adaptation on their satisfaction with life in South Korea. To this end, this study surveyed 132 female North Korean defectors and determined the relationships among self-esteem, economic adaptation, and life satisfaction in South Korea. The factors examined for economic adaptation were economic activity rates and income levels. Psychological adaptation constituted life satisfaction. The survey results found that female North Korean defectors had difficulty adapting both economically and psychologically, with health issues cited as one of the main reasons for maladaptation. Furthermore, it was shown that self-esteem and economic adaptation were important factors in life satisfaction. Moreover, pursuing education or having a job positively influenced self-esteem, indicating that economic adaptation had not only a direct impact but also an indirect impact on life satisfaction. Although receipt of basic living expense subsidies did not have a significant impact on psychological adaptation, such subsidies were a great help in the early stage of their life in the South. These results provide meaningful suggestions for developing policies to help with North Korean refugees’ economic adjustment and integration into the South Korean society through work and education.

이 논문의 목적은 북한이탈여성의 자존감과 경제적 적응이 남한생활만족에 미치는 영향요인을 분석함 으로써 북한이탈주민의 사회통합방안을 모색하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 이 연구에서는 경제적 적응을 경제활동참여와 소득수준으로, 심리적 적응을 생활만족도로 개념을 구성하고, 북한이탈여성 132명의 설 문조사 자료를 이용하여 자존감과 경제적 적응, 생활만족도와의 관계를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 북한이탈주 민의 자존감과 경제적 적응이 심리적 적응인 생활만족의 중요한 요인임이 증명되었다. 또한 경제적 적응은 자존감에 긍정적인 영향을 미침으로써 생활만족도에 직접적인 영향뿐 아니라 간접적인 영향도 미치고 있 는 것으로 나타났다. 기초생계비 수급은 심리적 적응에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것은 아니지만 북한이탈주 민의 초기 남한사회적응에 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 결과는 일과 교육을 통한 북한이 탈주민의 사회통합의 정책적 방안에 시사점을 제공해준다.
