The study is translating the 87 Sumo technical terms, which the ‘Ozumo(大相撲)’ officially recognizes as a standard, into Korean. The terms are the key words of Japanese culture and Japanese people greatly enjoy Sumo in their daily lives. In Korea, however, the terms are not translated and conceptualized yet. This is why the study is trying to translate and conceptualize the terms into Korean. In fact, there are basic differences between Sumo and SSirum(Korean Wrestling) and it is not easy to translate each term into Korean correctly the way as it has in Japanese. This is some realistic limitation each language has on its own in the translation. But, there must be some continuous efforts, by the interpreters and translators, translating the Japanese cultural terms and texts into Korean to help learners to understand the Japanese language fully and to communicate the meaning as it is.

본고는 일본문화를 대표하는 키워드의 하나이며 일본이들이 가장 즐기는 스포츠인 ‘스모’와 관련된 기술 용어의 개념 정리 작업이 극히 미비한 현실을 극복하고자 하는 의도에서 일본스모협회에서 주관하는 ‘오즈모(大相撲)’에서 공식적으로 인정하는 기술 87가지 스모경기의 기술용어를 한국어로 번역해 본 것이다. 스모기술의 체계와 한국씨름의 기술체계가 근본적으로 차이가 나는 관계로 용어의 일대일 통번역은 현실적으로 한계가 있음이 들어 났지만 일본어 비학습자들의 이해를 용이하게 하고 사실적 의미 전달을 위해서는 일본 문화관련 어휘 혹은 텍스트에 대한 통번역자들의 충분한 이해와 연구 노력이 지속되어야 할 것이다.
