Based on Benoit’s theory of functional analysis of political discourse, this study examined systematically the discourse of Seoul mayor debates. It is often regarded that the politicians during the election race relied more on negative comments than positive ones. It is also believed that the candidates focused more on images than policy. However, this study found that the candidates used positive acclaims more than negative attacks and focused more on policy than on image. Three televised debates based on functional approach supported the theory of functional analysis of politic discourse. The results are in line with the previous studies that analyzed the political discourse in the United States. Further studies are advised to include political advertisements, political address, and press releases to confirm the effectiveness of the findings based on the Benoit's functional approach.

이 연구는 2011년 서울 시장 선거 후보 텔레비전 토론회에서 사용된 정치담론을 베노이트의 정치담론의 기능적 분석이론(Theory of Functional Analysis of Political Discourse)을 사용하여 체계적으로 조사하였다. 선거 입후보자들의 정치적 수사에 대해 서 실증적 연구가 부족한 상태에서 정치담론은 부정적인 것이 대부분이라고 여겨지고 또한 정책 보다는 인물 위주의 선거가 이뤄진다는 주장이 제기되었다. 세 차례 공중파 텔레비전에서 이뤄진 정치토론을 모두 녹취한 후 내용분석한 이번 연구를 통해서 계량 적으로 분석한 결과, 후보자들은 자기 자신에 대한 칭찬이 비난보다 많았고, 또한 정책 을 인물보다 더 빈번하게 강조한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 경향은 선거토론제가 발달한 미국의 정치담론 분석과도 궤를 같이 하는 결과이다. 향후 연구에서는 정치 토론외에도 정치광고나 정치연설을 베노이트의 정치담론의 기능적 분석방법을 사용하여 연구결과 를 확인하여 이 이론이 한국적 상황에서도 유효한지에 대해서 검증할 필요가 제기되는 바이다.
