This study is about the meaning of emotion and sense in children’s spirituality and their relationship. For that purpose it examines the theory of Ratcliff who defines spirituality of children as the experience of awe and wonder and the theory of Hay and Nye who claim that geography of spirit is comprised of ‘awareness-sensing,’ ‘value-sensing’ and ‘mystery-sensing.’ Exploring their theories gives us a new insight that ‘emotion’ and ‘sense’ are the two most essential and critical elements of children’s spirituality. In addition, the relationship between emotion and feeling in Damasio’s theory makes it clear that emotion itself is the result of our bodies, namely our sense’s work and that our perception is rooted in our body as the emotion is. The proper understanding of their relationship gives us a new insight on understanding children, the epistemological assumptions, and all the areas of education including the object, content, and method of education. It also challenges us to reflect our conventional understanding and practice of children’s education and catalyzes to exploring a new paradigm of children’s education.

이 논문은 ‘어린이 영성’과 감정 및 감각의 관계를 고찰한 후, 이를 바탕으로 어린이영 성형성 교육의 방향을 모색한 논문이다. 이를 위해 이 논문은 먼저 어린이 영성을 ‘감탄과 경이의 경험’으로 정의하고 있는 Ratcliff의 이론 및 Hay & Nye의 영성 지형도를 살펴보았 다. 어린이 영성을 ‘감탄과 경이의 경험’으로 정의하고 있는 Ratcliff의 이론이나, 영성의 지형도가 ‘자각감’, ‘신비감’ 그리고 ‘가치감’으로 이루어졌다고 보는 Hay & Nye의 이론에 대한 고찰은 ‘감정’과 ‘감각’이 어린이 영성을 이루는 핵심적이고도 중요한 두 요소라고 하는 통찰을 주었다. 또한 Damasio의 이론에 나타난 감정과 느낌과의 관계는, 감정 자체가 우리의 몸, 즉 감 각의 작용이라고 하는 것을 분명하게 해 주었고, 감정 뿐 만 아니라 인식도 그 근원이 몸 에 있다는 사실에 대한 통찰을 주었다. 영성과 감정 그리고 감각의 이와 같은 관계는 영성형성교육에 대한 근본적인 방향을 제시하여 주었는바, 어린이 이해나 인식론적 전제 뿐 만 아니라, 교육의 목적, 내용, 그리 고 방법에 이르기까지 교육 전반에 관한 새로운 통찰을 주며, 이를 통해 우리가 가지고 있는 관습적 교육이해 및 반복적으로 수행해온 교육실천을 반성하고 새로운 패러다임 모 색을 촉구한다.
