The North Korean defectors who have lived long in the society different from South Korea shows symptoms in diversity of maladjustment in the course of adapting themselves to South Korean society and such maladjustment can be connected to deviant and criminal behaviors. We can point both financial and psychological·sociological factors as causes of such maladjustment of North Korean defectors. The roles of correction welfare to prevent social maladjustment of North Korean refugees are motivation employment, refusal of dependence upon governmental aid, using of correction social workers with expertise, remediation of prejudice and negative view against defectors, building of organic network and training for establishment of upright values as well as reeducation of prison inmates.

이념과 제도가 다른 곳에서 살아온 북한이탈주민들은 남한사회에 적응하는 과정에서 다양한 부적응 현상을 나타내고 있으며 이는 일탈과 범죄행위로 이어지기도 한다. 북한이탈주민의 사회 부적응 원인으로 경제적 요인과 심리ㆍ사회적 요인으로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 북한이탈주민의 사회 부적응 예방을 위한 교정복지의 역할은 취업에 대한 동기부여 제고 및 정부의존 성향 지양, 전문성을 가진 교정사회복지사의 활동, 북한이탈주민에 대한 편견과 부정적인 시각 교정, 유기적인 네트워크 구축, 가치관 정립을 위한 교육, 수형자 재교육 등이다.
