The production methods of plain roof tiles have a very long tradition, and some of these traditional methods are still practiced. Therefore, the study of roof tiles has to begin by studying modern production methods of roof tiles, and various approaches, such as experimental archaeology, are required. There have been many studies undertaken on plain roof tiles until now, and some of their attributes have been the focus of debate between scholars adopting opposing views. One of the debates has been on the dividing traces and textile traces found on roof tiles. Therefore, in this study, I reviewed the current arguments on these plain roof tile attributes and presented my own opinions based on experimental archaeological research. As a result, a basic understanding of these production traces was increased, for example by reconstructing the formation processes of dividing and textile traces. The problems inherent in the terminology used were also reviewed. I also investigated the drying traces found on the lower sides of roof tiles, which previously had not been studied as an attribute of roof tiles. Finally, I also considered the function of patterned and (upper side) divided roof tiles, a topic that should be reviewed in further studies on roof tiles.

평기와 제작방법은 매우 전통적으로 그 일부는 현재까지 전해지고 있다. 따라서 평기와 연구는 현재의 기와제작공정에서 출발해야 하며, 실험고고학적 방법 등 다양한 접근 방법이 필요하다. 평기와 연구는 지금까지 많은 성과가 집적되었지만, 일부 속성의 경우 연구자간에 이견이 있다. 대표적인 논쟁으로는 사절흔과 포목흔에 관련된 것이다. 따라서 이 글에서는 평기와에서 관찰되는 여러 속성 중 논쟁의 대상이 되고 있는 사항을 실험고고학적으로 검토하고 대안을 제시하였다. 그 결과 사절흔과 포목흔 등의 형성배경을 추정해보는 등 제작흔에 대한 기초적인 이해를 높일 수 있었으며, 이를 토대로 그간 사용해온 용어의 문제점을 검토해 보았다. 또 지금까지 평기와의 연구 속성으로 검토된 바 없는 하단부 건조흔에 대해 검토해보았다. 마지막으로 추후 평기와 연구에 있어 재검토해봐야 할 속성 중 하나인 문양과 전면 와도질흔이 확인되는 기와의 용도에 대해서도 언급하였다.
