The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics and limitations of research methods employed in the discipline of Translation Studies. The first part of this paper discusses the necessity for looking into research methods in the current phase of development of Translation Studies. The second part examines the methodological characteristics of Translation Studies in Korea, the reasons that most researchers adopt the empirical method, and the assumptions driving this choice. The third part explores another branch of research methods within Translation Studies apart from the empirical method by analyzing major cases of conceptual research and methodologies used by prominent authors. The conclusion proposes to go beyond the dichotomy of empirical and conceptual research, recommending approaches designed to contribute to the methodological maturity of Translation Studies.
