Although Catholic church conduced 7 holy ceremonies, the reformists restricts holy ceremonies to baptism and sacrament. Therefore, foot-washing ceremony was not accepted as an holy ceremony by any denominations. However, if modern church remembers Jesus washed His disciples' feet and commanded to conduct foot-washing ceremony, they have to actively conduct foot-washing ceremony which has the meanings of modesty, serving, love, forgiveness, holiness and glorious life. It seems that modern church does not feel the need or obligation for foot-washing ceremony. Modern church should provide education on the meaning of foot-washing ceremony and expand it from Sunday School to leaders, from assembly to regular program to enhance the awareness of the discipleship of Jesus through foot-washing ceremony. . This article proposes that modern church in which confession is limited to the ceremony to acknowledge and agree several creeds should let faith expressed specifically in everyday life and the fruit proving the honesty of faith born through foot-washing ceremony. Until now Christian church has pursued faith theoretically in the preaching-oriented worship to developed a variety of theological theories. However, if individualism, church-centered, denomination-centered egoism continue, christian church will close the door for evangelism and cannot avoid judgment on the final day. To prevent such phenomenon from continuing in christian church, it seems that modern church needs a new understanding and approach to the foot-washing ceremony. Foot-washing ceremony was originated from the event where Jesus Christ, the creator and messiah, washed His creatures 12 disciples (John 13:1-15). Foot washing ceremony is the ceremony to stop His disciples' arguments on who is higher and let them live the life of modest, serving, love, forgiveness and glory, with towel around His waist and kneeling down. Recently the large enterprises of Korea washed the feet of the representatives of their partner companies to build partnership rather than subordinate relationship. It seems that Christian church has to take initiatives on it. It is desired that the leaders of modern church begins a new discussion on the foot-washing ceremony.

가톨릭은 7성례를 시행하였으나, 종교개혁자들은 성례전을 오직 세례와 성찬으로 제한하였다. 그러므로 세족식은 어디에서도 성례전으로 받아들여지지 못했다. 그러나 예수 그리스도께서 제자들의 발을 씻기시고 세족식을 강력히 시행하라고 명하신 것을 기억한다면 겸손․섬김․사랑․죄 사함․성결․영광 돌리는 삶의 의미를 지니고 있는 세족식을 현대교회는 적극적으로 실시하여야 한다. 현대교회는 세족식에 대한 필요성이나 의무감을 느끼지 못하는 것 같다. 현대교회는 세족식을 통해 예수 그리스도의 제자도가 무엇인지를 깨닫고 실천하도록 그 의미를 분명히 교육하고 어린이 주일학교에서부터 지도자들까지, 각종 집회와 정기적으로 교회력에 따라 세족식을 확대 실시하여야 한다. 본고에서는 신앙 고백을 교회 안에서 정해진 시간 내에서만 여러 가지 신앙신조를 믿고 인식하고 동의하는 것으로 끝내 버리는 현대교회가 세족식을 통하여 생활에서 신앙이 구체적으로 표현되도록 하여야 하며, 신앙의 진실성을 증명하는 열매들이 맺어지도록 하여야 함을 주장하였다. 지금까지 기독교회는 설교 중심 예배로 신앙을 이론적으로 추구하여 다양한 신학이론의 발전을 이루었다. 그러나 신앙적인 열매를 맺기 보다는 오히려 개인주의, 개교회주의, 교단주의, 이기주의가 지속된다면 기독교회는 전도의 문이 닫힐 뿐만 아니라, 마지막 때에 심판을 면치 못하게 될 것으로 보인다. 이와 같은 현상이 기독교회에 지속되지 않도록 현대교회가 세족식에 대한 새로운 이해와 접근이 필요하다고 보여 진다. 세족식은 창조주이시며, 메시야로 오신 예수 그리스도께서 피조물인 제자들의 발을 직접 씻어 주심에서 유래되었다(요 13:1-15). 세족식은 누가 더 크냐는 제자들에게 논쟁을 그치고 겸손․섬김․사랑․죄 사함․성결․영광 돌리는 삶을 살게 하려고 예수 그리스도께서 허리에 수건을 두르고 무릎을 꿇고 제자들의 발을 씻어주신 예식이다. 최근 한국의 대기업들이 협력사 대표들의 발을 씻어주며 갑을 관계가 아닌 동반자 관계를 형성하려는 노력을 기울이고 있다. 오히려 기독교회가 앞장서야 하는 것이 아닌지 현대교회 지도자들을 통해 세족식에 대한 새로운 논의가 시작되기를 소망해 본다.
