This article attempts to show that oral history interviews which have been increasingly used in the publication of local ethnography are the important means to collect historical materials for the study of local history. The author discusses the way in which oral history interviews contribute to the study of local history in Southern Gyeonggi province and the problems to be solved to further local history research. For this, the author reviews the present state of local history research and its major arguments and issues. Next, the author examines the positioning of local ethnography in the study of local history. As a case of writing a local ethnography combined with oral history research, the author shows the way in which oral history research has been carried out in the local ethnographies of Gwachon city, Gunpo city, Gwangju city, Suwon city and Suwon Seodundong. Lastly, the author suggests the construction of community archives for local ethnography to become the study of local history.

이 글은 최근 지방지 편찬에서 중요성이 증가하고 있는 구술사 연구가 지방사 연구에 서 필수적인 구술 기록 수집을 동반한다는 문제의식에서 출발한다. 이에 필자는 최근 경 기 남부 지방지에서 활용되고 있는 구술사가 지방사 연구에 어떤 기여를 하고 있으며 어 떤 과제를 남기고 있는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 첫 번째로 한국 지방사 연구의 성과와 쟁점들을 검토한다. 두 번째로 지방사 연구에서 지방지의 위치를 자리매김하면서 지방지의 과제를 정리한다. 세 번째로 필자가 집필자로 참여했던 과천시지, 광주시지, 군 포시지, 수원시지, 수원서둔동지, 의정부시사에서 어떻게 구술 자료가 수집되고 활용되었 는지를 구체적으로 논의한다. 마지막으로 필자는 지방지가 진정한 지방사 연구가 되기 위해서는 지방의 공동체 아카이브 구축과 더불어 편찬되어야 할 것을 제안한다.
