In today’s society, the decline of modern perspectives which had supported the universality of cultural values has caused a rapid change in the judgmental criteria of cultural authenticity. The cultural authenticity which is perceived by tourists these days are closely related with the continuous process of continuation and being reconstructed by various cultural factors, especially the influence of popular culture. This study analyzes the case of the Shaolin Temple of Henan province, China to discuss the way traditional culture emerges with contemporary popular culture establishing new values. The Shaolin Temple of which cultural value once had declined was able to recover its true cultural authenticity by spreading of its image through performances associated with popular culture. Another important event by which the Shaolin Temple re-established its cultural authenticity was the success of 1982 motion picture “Shaolin Temple”. It was made possible by the emphasis on genuineness of traditional cultural factors. The case of Shaolin Temple shows how of the process of unique construction of cultural authenticity was progressed by the articulation of connection between traditional culture and popular culture in the post-modern society which has created new cultural authenticity, as well as the relationship between the two factors which combines with each other across cultural realm supplementing each other by mutual necessity.

現代社会では、文化価値の普遍性を支えてきた近代的価値観の退潮により、文化的真正性に関する従来の判断基準に急激な変化がもたされている。今日の観光客が認識する真正性は絶え間ない生成の過程に置かれており、かつて真正ではなかった諸文化要素、特にポピュラーカルチャーの影響を受け新たに再構成される。本研究では、過去の伝統文化と現在のポピュラーカルチャーがどのような方式で絡まりながら新たな文化的意味を構築していくのかを、中国河南省の嵩山少林寺の事例を通して検討した。一時期衰退した少林寺が再び文化的真正性を取り戻したのは、専らポピュラーカルチャーのパフォーマンスによるイメージの拡散によるものだった。一方で、少林寺が真正性を獲得した決定的なきっかけとなった1982年の映画『少林寺』の商業的な成功は、伝統の要素を取り入れ「本物らしさ」を強調したからこそ可能であった。少林寺の事例は、伝統文化の公式的な地位とポピュラーカルチャーの大衆的支持の接合により新たな真正性を創り出す脱近代社会に独特な真正性構築のプロセスと、お互いの必要により文化的領域を超越して一体化する両者の相互補完的な関係を見せてくれる。
