China is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-character country. In addition to Han, China has 55 ethnic minorities. The population of minority is one hundred and six million and they use more than 130 kinds of language, up to 60 kinds of characters. The success or failure of the implementation of the National language policy is not only related to the development of each nation's political, economic, cultural conditions that are supposed to improve the overall quality of all ethnic groups, but also related to the country's long term stability. Therefore, the minority language work has always been highly regarded. This paper describes the current situation of the minority language use and the basic content of the national language policy, also summarizes the achievements of the minority language work since the founding of New China, and points out the existing problems connected to those issues. This paper provides the basic reference for the future development or amendment of the minority language policy.

중국은 다민족, 다언어, 다문자 국가로 漢族외에도 55개의 소수민족이 있고 그 인구는 약 1억 600 만 명이지만 사용하는 언어는 130여 종이며 사용하는 문자도 60여 종이다. 따라서 민족 언어와 문자정책 실시의 성공 여부는 각 민족의 정치, 경제, 문화의 발전과 민족 소질의 제고와 긴밀한 관계가 있으며 더욱이 국가의 장구적인 평화 발전과도 관계되므로 중국에서는 민족 언어와 문자에 대한 정책을 매우 중시하고 있다. 본문에서는 중국의 민족 언어와 문자사용 현황을 고찰하며 중화인민공화국이 성립된 이래 소수민족 언어 문자 정책의 성과를 살펴보고 존재하는 문제를 지적함으로써 중국의 소수민족 정책을 이해하는데 도움을 주고자 한다.
