- The death rate of the elderly has been increased constantly, while the total number of traffic accidents have been decreased in Korea. This paper presents the relationship between the walking speeds and the crossing distances of the elderly in Gyeongju City. Sixty three pedestrian data were collected, and analyzed statistically. The 15th-percentile walking speed for older pedestrians (ages 60 over) was 0.81m/sec. The results shows that the further crossing distance exists the faster the elderly pedestrians tried to walk the crossings. For design purposes the values of 0.8m/sec for the elderly are appropriate in silver zone.
