In Shin Yu's Bukjeongrok, there is a realistic account of the 1658 Russian invasion by the sea near Heilong Jiang(Amur River) that was defeated by the Joseon marine forces. I consider the ‘geographical space and path’ to be important in the study of Shin Yu’s diary, Bukjeongrok. Therefore, the on-site surveys of the section from Hoiryeong to Mudanjiang are included in this paper. First, the real names of the locations and routing were checked and confirmed. There are many old names that are currently difficult to check, but I can draw the moving path along the old roads, and confirmed the locations of the major campsites, including Go-rai-ryeong, Na-han-ryeong, Mal-go-ri, Baek-ja-ryeong, Seok-am-jin, and Yeonggotap-seong. The location names and the moving path confirmed were included on the map after the coordinate transformation to fit the GPS(Global Positioning System), and the views were presented in the form of images. Second, the depictions of the paths and natural geographical spaces in the literature were reviewed. Shin Yu recorded major marches thoroughly in his diary. In particular, he depicted the march through the Baekjaryeong Woods, the difficulties of crossing the river at Seokamjin, the anguish he felt at Yeonggotap-seong, and the memories of the anthropogeography at Yeonggotap-seong.

1658년 신유가 지휘한 조선군의 나선정벌은 역사적으로나 문학적으로나 매우 중요하고 흥미로운 사건이다. 필자는 신유의 진중일기 『북정록』을 연구하면서 ‘지리 공간 및 노정’의 의미를 중요하게 생각하고, 나선정벌의 일부 구간인 함경북도 회령 - 흑룡강성 목단강시 구간을 답사하며 조사한 결과를 이 논문에 기술하였다. 이 논문의 주요 내용은 다음의 두 가지다. 첫째, 위 구간의 실제 지명과 이동 경로를 확인․비정한 내용이다. 확인하기 어려운 고 지명도 많았으나, 남아 있는 옛길을 따라 이동하면서 이동 경로도를 그려낼 수 있었고, 古羅耳嶺(현 海關嶺), 羅汗嶺(현 天橋嶺), 末古里(현 馬蓮河), 柏子嶺(현 老松嶺), 도강처(현 石巖鎭), 행복촌, 영고탑성, 해랑강, 목단강 등 주요 지역의 위치를 비정하였다. 확인한 지명과 노정은 GPS 좌표 기록 작업을 하여 지도로 나타내고, 경관은 사진으로 제시하였다. 둘째, 길과 주변 공간이 신유의 인식과 감회와 어떠한 연관 관계를 지니는지, 자연 지리공간이 어떻게 문학적으로 형상화되는지 고찰하였다. 신유의 『북정록』은 객관적 사실과 임무 수행에 관련된 일을 기록한 전쟁 수행일기에 가깝다. 두만강 도강부터 영고탑성 입성까지의 일기는 내용이 단조로운 편이나, 신유는 주요 행군 노정을 일기에 빠짐없이 기록하였으며, 특히 울창한 백자령 숲에 대한 감회나 석암진 도강처에서의 상황과 힘겨움, 영고탑 성문밖에서 느끼는 고뇌와 피곤함, 영고탑성의 장수, 정세, 토지풍속 등에 대한 감회를 절제있게 표현하였다. 이러한 지리 공간에 대한 연구결과를 바탕으로 ‘문학지도’ 제작의 필요성, 『북정록』과 허구적 개작이 이뤄진 <북정일기>, <배시황전>, <북행일록> 등의 작품을 새롭게 비교연구할 필요성을 제기하였다.
