The 100-year history of the French Revolution is similar with South Korea’s democratic history, like Korea’s 4․19 of 1960, 5․18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, June Democratic Protest of 1987. So Media is used to broadcast that the musical film Les Miserables is the ‘dejavu’ of the modern history of Korea. However I criticized the Les Miserables as the repetition of the sublime beauty in this article. According to Immanuel Kant, He suggested the mathematical sublime and the dynamical sublime. Through the mathematical sublime and dynamics sublime, Immanuel Kant explained the aesthetical judgement about absolute immensity from human deliberation. Slavoj Zizek wrote the Downward-Synthesis on Christinity. And I sugested the Downward-Sublime and the Sublime from above. In this musical movie, Everybody is sublime. First of all, The life of the Bishop Miriel wrapped the entire work with Downward-Sublime. The Bishop pretends he has given the plates to Jean Valjean and tells him he forgot the silver candlesticks. The Bishop briefly appeared in the movie. But in the novel, He is very important exitence who appeared the 1/10 of full amount of the Novel. Secondly, Jean Valjean was an illiterate son of a tree-pruner from a small peasant family. After both his parents had died, at age 25 he was left to care for his elder sister who had raised him, a widow with seven children aged one to eight. He possessed a gun and did a bit of poaching. His life started from the bottom of the desperated life. We can see the Downward-Sublime in his life, miserable, horrible, dirty. Third, Captain Javert tried to keep the order of law. Javert is the primary antagonist. His life show the sublime from above. Fourth, the secondary characters who are citizens in Paris show the revolutionary sublime. The barricade scene maximize the revolutionary sublime beauty scene. The abandoned flag was raised by the crowd. Most of the important song in this film is the pray song, they sing the coincidence of ‘love－faith－revolution’. After all, the theme of this musical movie is the sin and forgiveness and salvation, and this is the ultimate question for human beings.

프랑스 혁명 100년사와 한국 민주주의 역사, 한국의 4․19혁명, 5․18광주민주화운동, 87년 6월 항쟁 등과 유사하다. 그래서 뮤지컬 영화 <레 미제라블>에는 ‘한국 현대사의 데자뷰’라는 말이 많이 쓰였다. 그렇지만 필자는 이 글에서 영화 <레 미제라블>의 흥행을 근원적으로 숭고미의 반복으로 보았다. 이 글에서 필자는 임마누엘 칸트의 두 가지 숭고미, 곧 수학적 숭고와 역학적 숭고를 설명하고, 슬라보예 지젝이 말했던 위로부터의 숭고와 아래로부터의 숭고를 설명했다. 이 작품에서 숭고하지 않은 존재는 없다. 첫째, 미리엘 신부의 삶은 이 작품 전체를 숭고미로 감싼다. 영화에서는 잠시 등장하는 미리엘 신부이지만 소설에서는 전체 분량의 1/10 정도 될 만치 중요하다. 둘째, 장 발장의 숭고미는 처절한 인간의 밑바닥 삶부터 시작되는 ‘아래로부터의 숭고’로 보여준다. 악만 남아있던 장 발장이 변한다. 장 발장의 삶이 더럽고 끔찍하고 비참할수록 역설적으로 그의 삶이 갖는 숭고성을 강화된다. 셋째, 자베르 경감은 법질서를 숭앙하는 ‘위로부터의 숭고’를 보여준다. 넷째, 부차적인 인물들인 시민들의 숭고는 ‘혁명적 숭고미’를 보여준다. 바리케이드 장면이야말로 ‘혁명적 숭고미’를 극대화시킨 장면이라 할 수 있겠다. 버려졌던 깃발이 군중들에 의해 높이 들어 올려 진다. 영화의 중요한 노래들은 기도문으로 이루어졌고, ‘사랑－신앙－혁명’의 일치를 노래하고 있다는 것도 밝혔다. 결국 주제는 죄와 용서와 구원이지만, 이는 인간에 대한 궁극적 질문이다.
