The objective of this article is to investigate and analyze the ancient Korean swords on which the Chinese characters were carved. Until now three ancient Korean swords were found, on which Chinese characters were carved : the Seven-branched sword (Chiljido, 七支刀), the Ring-pommel sword with dragon-phoenix decorations (龍鳳紋環頭大刀), and the Circle-pommel sword (圓頭大刀). Of these swords, when we exposed the Seven-branched sword (Chiljido, 七支刀) to X-ray irradiation, we could read that it was made on November 16. Therefore, we could understand that it was made in 408 A.D., the 4th year reigned by King Junji (腆支王) in Baekje (百濟). We could interpret it as evidence that the Crown Prince of Baekje (百濟), Kuisin (久爾辛)’s birth led to the production of the Seven-branched sword (Chiljido, 七支刀) and subsequently, it was granted to Japanese King (倭王). In the case of Ring-pommel sword with dragon-phoenix decorations (龍鳳紋環頭大刀) in Tokyo national museum, we could also understand Baekje(百濟)’s influence on the sword in the light of similar shapes and manufacturing methods of the Ring-pommel swords with the dragon-phoenix decorations (龍鳳紋環頭大刀) excavated in ancient Korean Peninsula and Japan. In addition, analyzing Circle-pommel sword (圓頭大刀) excavated from the Changryung Kyodong ancient tomb 11, we could find that it has an affinity with Baekje (百濟) not with Koguryo (高句麗), in the light of its shape. Therefore, we concluded that from three Korean swords on which Chinese characters were carved on, southern Korean peninsula was administered by the Baekje(百濟) in the ancient times.

本考는 고대 한반도에서 나타나고 있는 刀劍類의 銘文을 재검토함으로써 韓半島系 銘文大刀에 대해 재조명하고자 하였다. 현재까지 韓半島系 銘文大刀로는 七支刀, 東京國立博物館 소장 龍鳳紋環頭大刀, 창녕 교동 11호분의 圓頭大刀가 있다. 七支刀는 銘文 해독의 진전에 따라 408년 전지왕4년 왕세자인 구이신이 탄생한 것을 계기로 백제가 왜에 하사하였던 칼이라는 것이 확실시되고 있다. 東京國立博物館 소장 龍鳳紋環頭大刀의 경우, 가야에서 출토된 것으로 전하고 있어 대가야에서 제작된 것으로 보는 견해가 있지만, 한반도와 일본에서 나타나는 龍鳳紋環頭大刀의 형태적 유사성이나 제작 기법에 있어서 백제와 관련이 있으며 서체와 상감기법에 있어서 일본의 稲荷山古墳의 鐵劍 銘文과도 관련이 있기 때문에 백제와의 연관성이 주목된다. 창녕 교동 11호분의 圓頭大刀의 경우는 ‘先人’으로 판독되는 일부 글자를 통해 윗부분을 ‘上部’로 해독하면서 고구려와의 관계 속에서 파악해왔다. 하지만, 5세기말-6세기 당시 고구려가 가야에 大刀를 賜與했다는 고구려-가야의 관계가 문헌에 나타나고 있지 않는데다가 고구려에서 圓頭大刀가 출토된 예가 없다는 것으로 인해 고구려와의 관련성이 의문시 되고 있다. 오히려 은상감 기술은 백제 지역에서 집중적으로 나타나고 있으며 창녕 교동 11호분의 圓頭大刀가 형식적인 면에 있어서 공주 송산리 1호묘와 유사성을 보이고 있음이 주목된다. 따라서 현재까지 확인되는 韓半島系 銘文大刀의 경우 백제와의 관련성을 제외하고 생각하기는 어려우며 이는 5-6세기 당시 한반도 남부에 나타나고 있는 백제의 영향력과 관련이 있는 것으로 판단된다.
