In general, intercultural competencies have been regarded as a complex of abilities needed to perform effectively and appropriately when interacting with others who are linguistically and culturally different from oneself. In a plural and multicultural society, schools have a specific task to develop students' intercultural competencies. Thus, academic interests in developing intercultural competencies in schools are on the rise. The purpose of this article was to clarify theoretical frameworks for the concept of intercultural competencies, give valid explanations for the urgency and significance of intercultural competencies in moral education, and propose possible teaching methods for developing intercultural competencies in moral education. For this aim, I traced historical backgrounds regarding intercultural competencies through documents analysis method, and introduced four prominent models of intercultural competencies. Then I logically showed the reason why intercultural competencies should be foci of much attentions in moral education. Finally, I proposed four possible teaching methods and their concrete applications such as case studies, critical events, role playing, and visual imagery in order to develope intercultural competencies .

문화적으로 다양한 사회에서 간문화 역량(intercultural competence)은 거의 모든 사회적 만남에서 중요한 것이다. 자신과는 상이한 문화적 배경을 갖고 있는 타인들과 관계를 맺고 소통하기 위해서는 간문화 역량이 필수적으로 요청되기 때문이다. 간문화 역량은 언어적ㆍ문화적으로 자신과는 상이한 사람들과 상호작용을 해야 하는 상황에서 효과적으로 그리고 적절하게 소통을 하는데 필요한 능력들의 복합체를 의미한다. 그러기에 간문화 역량은 다문화 사회에서 학교교육을 통해 학생들이 학습해야 할 필수적인 교육 역량 가운데 하나로 급부상하였다. 이에 이 글에서는 간문화적 역량의 이론적 틀(theoretical frameworks)을 밝히고, 도덕교육에서 간문화 역량이 중요한 이유를 논증하며, 나아가 도덕 교과 수업에서 간문화 역량을 발달시키기 위한 교수 방법을 제안하였다. 이에 이 논문에서는 간문화 역량에 관한 연구 동향을 개관하고, 간문화 역량에 관한 네 가지 모델들을 소개하였으며, 도덕 교과에서 간문화 역량의 중요성을 도덕 공동체의 범위 확대와 도덕 발달의 촉진 측면에서 논증하였다. 나아가 도덕 교과에서 간문화 역량을 발달시키기 위한 교수 방법으로 사례 연구, 위기 사건, 역할놀이, 시각적 심상의 장점과 단점을 밝히고, 구체적인 적용 사례를 제시하였다.
