Many contemporary Christians outside as well as inside the church experience "spiritual homelessness" in their own ways, which has been induced mainly by the gradual split between religion and spirituality. As a substitute for our "spiritual homelessness" a new spirituality movement accompanied with many writings on spirituality and spiritual formation programs offered has emerged. In order for our spiritual quest to deepen our spirituality, to lead us into a healthy spiritual formation, and to maintain its power to transform our spiritual lives, churches, and societies, there should be a healthy theology of spirituality, most of all. Christian spirituality can be understood better and when we approach it, based on the Image of God. The Image of God has its two characteristics: "image as stamp" and "image as reflection." The ultimate goal of spirituality is to confirm the image of God in us and fully realize it in our own situation, through our own character. Christian spirituality is not just about "apatheia" in individual dimension but about the living out of the Image of God in our "relational space" in the midst of our society. The image of God can be described as the foundational self with calling from God which is supposed to be concretized voluntarily, creatively and pleasantly. The foundational self can be confirmed and sought by spirituality when it is motivated and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Also, we need to start understanding the Image of God from the very context of our lives, attuning to how we actually feel, want, and think. For this, we can focus on spirituality of dynamics and psychological concept of the true self in order to have people seek spirituality in a healthier way, and more lively experiencing "the sense of feeling real." We can also focus on dynamics of spirituality as a life of seeking likeness to God, without sticking to the traditional way of substantially approaching to the Image of God. We should be able to encourage and support how each individual seeks spirituality in his or her own way, instead of making it generalized.

최근 우리나라에서 일고 있는 교회 안팎의 영성에 대한 관심의 증대와 많은 영성 관련 저작들, 영성훈련과 프로그램의 활성화는 대안적 영성운동으로 부를 수 있다. 교회의 신학적, 교리적 가르침과 신앙생활 교육이 많은 사람들의 영성에 제대로 응답하지 못하고 이끌어주지 못하는 결과로 볼 수 있다. 오늘날 교회에서 나타나는 세속화 현상, 종교적 경직성, 교리 중심성, 생동감 없는 모방성, 무의미한 반복성을 경험하며 생겨나는 영적 배회현상에 대한 대안으로서 영성에 대한 깊은 관심이 생겨나고 있다. 이러한 기독교 영성에 대한 깊은 관심과 추구는 하나님형상에 기초한 영성신학에 이끌릴 때 더욱 풍성한 생명력과 역동성을 가져올 수 있을 것이다. 이를 통해 교회의 영성신학도 더욱 굳건해지고 개인의 영성생활에 있어서도 교회 안팎의 영적배회자들에게 한걸음 더 다가갈 수 있을 것이다. 이 논문은 영성을 하나님형상을 구현하여 하나님 닮음을 이루어가게 하는 거룩한 충동과 능력으로 정의한다. 하나님형상을 지닌 인간의 영적 실존을 “근원적 자기”로 표현하며 영성형성을 “근원적 자기다움”을 추구하는 과정으로 간주한다. 이 논문은 이런 인식을 바탕으로, 하나님형상의 근원성과 역동성을 살펴보며, 위니캇(Donald Winnicott)의 “참자기”표출에 대한 설명을 통해 하나님형상의 구현으로써의 영성생활을 비추어보고 있다. 참자기 표출은 하나님이 저마다에게 주신 개성으로 볼 수 있고, 각자의 고유한 개성을 통해서, 그리고 각자의 특별한 환경과 관계 속에서, 영성이 온전하게 추구될 수 있다. 영성형성을 “근원적 자기” 즉, 하나님과의 관계 속에서 규정된 ‘나’ 자신의 정체성 발견에서 시작하여 “근원적 자기다움”을 이루어가는 과정으로 이해할 때, 이러한 “근원적 자기됨”의 사명을 이루는 삶은 각자의 개성과 환경에 따라 독특하고 창조적으로 이루어진다. 그러므로 최근 우리나라의 영성운동은 개인의 영성형성에 좀 더 진지한 관심을 기울이며, 교회가 그러한 영성형성을 끌어안고 지지해주는 문제를 놓고 고민하며 적극적으로 대응해야 할 것이다.
