A study on the characteristics of demonstratives in Portuguese

This paper aims to observe morphosyntactic and semantic properties of demonstratives in Portuguese and to analyze the chacacteristics of their use. We discuss the structure and function of demonstratives observing the configuration and combination of the elements in noun phrase(NP), and also try to explain the relationship between the reference and the deixis in the semantic aspects. One subdivision (este, esse, aquele) is referential, deictic and marked by affix -a, acts as the margin of the NP. The other subdivision (isto, isso, aquilo) is also referential and deictic but marked by affix -o, acts in the core of the NP. The demonstratives are parts of speech defined by their referencial function and by their deictic function in language. Through this study on the demonstratives we can provide the best environment to students in teaching and learning Portuguese as a foreign language.

O presente estudo tem como objetivo principal observar as propriedades morfossintáticas e semânticas dos demonstrativos em português e analisar as características de uso deles. Discutimos um pouco a estrutura e a função dos demonstrativos observando a configuração e a combinação dos elementos no sintagma nominal(SN), e ainda, tentamos explicar as relações entre a foricidade e a dêixis nos aspectos semânticos. Uma subclasse (este, esse, aquele) é marcada pelo afixo -a, atua como margem do SN, e é fórica e dêitica. Outra subclasse (isto, isso, aquilo) é marcado pelo afixo -o, atua no núcleo do SN, e também é fórica e dêitica. Os demonstrativos são classes definidas por seu papel fórico e por seu papel dêitico na linguagem. Através desse estudo sobre os demonstrativos, podemos proporcionar aos alunos o melhor ambiente no ensino e na aprendizagem do português como língua estrangeira.
