This study aims to find out the answers to why the territorial dispute over the Senakaku islands took place, why it is so difficult to settle, and how it will be resolved. The dispute is a sovereignty dispute occurred due to the value of the islands. The islands are valuable place as a center for sea traffic and a military strategic base, and related to energy security. Also, it is an emotional conflict of the two countries coming out of historical mistrust and animosity. Hence, the dispute seems not easy to settle. When it comes to the outlook for the dispute, a full-on confrontation between China and Japan will not take place. Secondly, the two countries possibly take part in a joint oil development. Thirdly, China seems to think that it is the best way to make the islands a disputed area in the international community. On the other hand, Japan is not easy to restore relations with China, and seems to suffer some economic blows. Lastly, the determination of the United States is likely to play an important role in settling the dispute between China and Japan.

역사적 전개과정에서 살펴볼 때, 조어도 분 쟁의 특징은 영유권 분쟁이면서 해상교통로의 요충지이자 군사전략적 거점으로써의 가치와 경제적 부분인 에너지 확보라는 측면이 있는 이 해관계가 얽혀 있는 갈등이다. 그리고 양국 국 민간의 역사적 불신과 반감이 만들어낸 민족 정 서적 갈등으로 볼 수 있다. 따라서 조어도 분쟁 은 다음과 같은 갈등구조를 가지고 있다. 첫째, 표면적 차원의 갈등구조이다. 즉, 조어도 분쟁 은 겉으로 보기에는 양국이 영유권 주장과 국제 법적 관점이 서로 다른 차원으로 만들어 낸 갈 등구조로 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 이면적 차원의 갈등 구조를 형성하고 있다. 즉, 조어도 분쟁은 실질 적으로 조어도를 얻었을 때 가지게 되는 경제적 가치와 전략적 가치가 너무나 크기 때문에 형성 된 갈등구조로 볼 수 있다. 셋째, 근본적 차원의 갈등구조를 가지고 있다. 즉, 조어도 분쟁은 중 국민족과 일본민족이 가지고 있는 상대국에 대 한 역사의식과 민족 정서적 측면이 만들어 낸 갈등구조로 볼 수 있다. 따라서 중일간의 조어 도 분쟁도 한일 간의 독도문제만큼 해결하기가 상당히 어려울 것으로 전망된다.
