The history of Chinese literature had been conceived and described primarily in terms of the conflict between realism and modernism before the New State Affairs Literature came up in 1990's. The New State Affairs Literature not only led us to find a new perspective of the literature, and asked us to rewrite the history of Chinese literature but also required a new viewpoint of interpretation. Even though we are in principle able to enumerate quite a few viewpoints of the new interpretation that agrees with the above requirement, it is worth noticing in particular the following three viewpoints: 1) post-modernism, 2) post-colonialism, 3) feminism. 1 examine, with Jin-Hwa Dai's "Rewriting Chinese 'Female' in 1980's and 19901s," how the new era in the history of Chinese literature could be understood in virtue of feminism that had been largely received in 1990's. I also argue that there are problems with the new description of the history of Chinese literature, while analyzing the texts of Yan Mo's Red Kaoliang Family and Bai Lin's One Woman's War. I derive two points from my argument against the new description of the history of Chinese literature. First, we need to recognize the individuality of literature. Second, we must notice the problem of literary value.
