The purpose of this study was to find key factors that affected reading achievement scores, and to identify educational implications by comparative analysis of the PISA 2009 results in the six OECD countries who achieved the highest scores in reading literacy. For the study, a two-leveled HLM was adopted. The study found that there were general factors explaining all or most of the countries' achievements in reading as well as specific factors unique to the countries. General factors across the countries were related mostly to variables at the student level, but there were no such factors at the school level. The general factors were three variables: holding amounts of books, reading strategy and attitude, and reading pleasure. Although there were specific factors that explained the cases of specific countries, further research is needed to interpret the results properly.

이 연구의 목적은 PISA 2009의 읽기소양 결과에서 가장 높은 점수를 나타난 OECD 6개 국가(우리나라를 포함하여 일본, 상하이-중국, 뉴질랜드, 핀란드, 호주)를 비교분석하여 읽기소양에 영향을 준 주요 요인과 변인을 찾아내고 교육적 시사점을 도출하는데 있다. 이 연구의 분석방법으로 위계적 선형모형(HLM)이 사용되었다. 이 연구의 결과, 6개 국가 전체 또는 대부분의 국가에 적용되는 공통요인과 각 나라의 특성에 따라 독특한 영향을 미치는 특별요인이 발견되었다. 공통요인은 주로 대부분 학생수준의 변인이었으며 학교수준의 변인 가운데서는 공통요인이 나타나지 않았다. 이러한 공통요인으로는 가정에서 보유한 도서의 수, 읽기 전략과 태도, 읽기 즐거움 변인 등 3가지가 도출되었다. 일부 국가에만 유의미하게 나타난 특별요인에 관련하여, 각 변인들이 해당 국가에 어떻게 영향을 주었고 어떤 시사점을 얻을 수 있는가를 명확히 해석하기 위해서 이들 변인에 대한 후속연구가 요구된다.
