With diversification and individualization of modern people’s lifestyles, there is growing recognition that gloves are closely related to the human body, not just as an accessory for fashion coordination. Gloves are no longer a subsidiary item of fashion but an important item in modern times emphasizing the meaning of total fashion. Gloves are a way to express aesthetic consciousness of humans and simultaneously, their position in fashion trends becomes more secure with the growing spotlight. This study aims to clarify the symbolic meaning that people want to express through various kinds of gloves by looking into the historical progress of western gloves and present basic data for studies on glove design by making actual pieces based on the symbolic meanings. The study methods include literary research and glove production. As a result of theoretical research, the symbolic meanings were divided into decoration, eroticism, enjoyment and body extension. Based on each symbolic meaning examined, the researcher developed creative designs of gloves and produced four works. This study is meaningful because it presented a wider view of gloves beyond a perspective focusing on clothes in terms of clothing studies and found the need of development of professional glove design through theory and production.

현대인의 라이프스타일이 점차 다양화·개성화됨에 따라, 장갑은 패션 코디네이션을 위한 액세서리 아이템의 위치에서 상승하여 복식의 일부로 신체와 밀접하게 관련된다는 인식이 증대되고 있다. 또한 토털 패션의 의미가 강조되는 현대에 장갑은 패션의 부수적인 위치에서 벗어나 중요한 아이템이 되었으며, 동시에 인간의 미의식 표현의 수단으로 자리 잡으면서 관심의 고조와 함께 패션 트렌드의 변화에 있어서도 그 위치가 확고해졌다. 본 연구는 서양 장갑의 발달 과정을 역사적으로 고찰하고 다양한 종류의 장갑을 통하여 인간들이 표현하고자 했던 상징적인 의미가 무엇인지를 규명하여, 이를 기초로 실제 작품을 제작함으로써 장갑 디자인 연구에 기초 자료를 제공하는데 목적을 두었다. 연구 방법은 문헌연구와 작품제작 두 부분으로 구성되었다. 이론적 연구의 결과 장갑의 상징적 의미는 장식성, 에로티시즘, 유희성, 신체확장성으로 구분되었다. 분석된 각각의 상징적 의미에 의거하여 연구자의 창의적 장갑 디자인 개발을 진행하고 4점의 작품을 실제 제작하였다. 본 연구의 의의는 복식연구에 있어 의상에만 치중하는 시각에서 벗어나 장갑까지를 포함하는 확대된 시각을 제시하였으며 전문적인 장갑디자인 개발의 필요성을 이론과 작품을 통해 밝힐 수 있다는 데 있다.
