This study aims to compare the characteristics of the narrative structure and contents in the old novels about the tale of step mother like , , , . The Japanese old novels’ narrative structure has a construction like this; ① the death of heroine’s mother - ② the step mother’s persecution and love ③ the stepchild and the family’s separation - ④ rescue and revenge by a supporter - ⑤ the end of reconciliation and happiness has a difference that it doesn’t have a revenge of number④ and happy ending and the lesson of ‘Reap as what one has sown’ were emphasized. The transcendent contents were almost excluded and heroine accomplished love by the realistic supporter and patron in two works. In the case of Korean old novels about step mother, it has seven steps of structure like this; ① the heroin’s birth tale - ② The mother’s death and the father’s second marriage - ③ the step mother and the step sister’s persecution - ④ the heroine’s marriage and happiness - ⑤ the step mother and the step sister' jealousy and the heroine’s death - ⑥ the heroine’s rebirth and revenge - ⑦ happiness Compared with the narrative structure of and , both works have almost same characteristics of ①, ②, ③. In the characteristics of ④, ⑤, ⑥, ⑦, they have overall similar structure although the order is inverted except that Janghwa and Hongyeon have the second birth tale. In the characteristics of contents, two works have a strong transcendence and the realistic supporter’s help is weak comparing to Japanese old novels. In addition to this, there are about seven differences. Let’s just say a few difference among these, the custom related to love relationship is strong in Japanese old novels. On the contrary, Korean works emphasize on the importance of the Confucian virtues and family. Japanese step-mother tales are based on the free love relationship. But, Korean novels focused on the match in heaven based on the transcendence.
