The purpose of this study is to survey Petit Dictionnaire Français -Coréen(Little French-Korean Dictionary, 법한뎐), which was published in 1901 in Seoul. Petit Dictionnaire Français-Coréen is the first French-Korean Dictionary published in Korea. It was compiled by French trader named Charles Alévêque, who had been lived in Korea for 4 years. The French-Korean Dictionary is composed of Préface(preface), Alphabet, lexicon, and supplement. It has 6,400 headwords and 712 examples of how words are used. The examples show the usages of spoken Korean in the beginning of the 20th century. The entry of the dictionary is composed of [headword(in French), part of speech, definition(in Korean), alphabetized transcription of definition], and some headwords are followed by the examples. The alphabetized transcription of Korean words helps the people who want to learn Korean language without any knowledge about Korean alphabet(한글, Hangeul). The author selected basic vocabulary and tried to interpret the meaning of headwords in plain language. So the French-Korean Dictionary could be useful to either French-speaking residents in Korea, or Koreans who want to learn French. The supplement is composed of ‘Ministères(ministries), Nombres Cardinaux Coréens purs(pure Korean cardinal numbers), Nombres Cardinaux Sinico-Coréens(Sino-Korean cardinal numbers), Nombres Ordinaux Coréens purs(pure Korean ordinal numbers), Nombres Ordinaux Sinico-Coréens(Sino-Korean ordinal numbers), Poids et mesures(weights and measures), Monnaies(money).’ As the author was a trader, he standardized the weights and measures, and calculated actual cash value of Korean money in detail.
