When we execute counseling therapy, we may raise some questions as follows: Is there any relation between counseling therapy and spiritual problems of human? If so, how could the spiritual dimension be connected to counseling therapy? As an inquiry on the spiritual dimension of counseling therapy, this study examines on how could counseling therapy be relevant to spiritual problems, reflecting D. Benner’s perspective. During pursuing this research, I suggest a direction forward, raising some questions like these: What kind of meaning does it give us to consider the spiritual dimension in the area of counseling therapy? If we consider the spiritual dimension, would it be excluding the psychological state of human being? If with the spiritual aspects we approach our clients who are anxious and in pain psychologically, what kind of attitude do we should take? These questions would be very important in the spiritual dimension of counseling therapy. For as we approach to the spiritual level in an actual field of counseling therapy, a priori knowledge of human’s psychological state is very important. The answers of Christian pastoral counseling to the questions above could be different from the ones of general counseling. Because Christian pastoral counseling should deal with spiritual health as well as mental and physical health, unlike general counselors the Christian pastoral counselors engage in somewhat different aspect.

상담심리치료를 진행할 때 우리는 다음과 같은 질문을 제기할 수 있다. 상담심리치료는 영적인 문제와 관련되어 있는가? 만약 그렇다면 영성적 차원은 상담심리치료에 어떻게 부합되는가? 본 소고는 상담심리치료의 영성적 차원에 관한 고찰로서, 영성에 관한 문제들이 어떻게 정신치료와 관련되는지에 대해 베너(D. Benner)의 관점을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 본 논문을 진행하면서 연구자는 다음과 같은 질문을 제기하면서 나아갈 방향을 제시했다. 과연 상담심리치료의 현장에서 영성적 측면을 고려한다는 것은 어떤 의미인가? 영성적 측면을 고려한다는 것은 인간의 심리적 상태를 과연 외면하는가? 만약 심리적으로 불안해하고 고통스러운 내담자들을 영성적 측면에서 접근한다면 우리는 어떤 자세를 취해야 하는가? 이와 같은 질문은 상담심리치료의 영성적 측면에서의 매우 중요한 질문이라고 볼 수 있다. 왜냐하면 상담심리치료의 현장에서 영성적 차원으로 접근하고자 할 때 인간 심리적 상태에 대한 선험적 이해는 매우 중요하기 때문이다. 이러한 질문들에 대하여 기독교(목회)상담과 일반상담은 각각 다른 대답이 나올 수 있다. 그러나 기독교(목회)상담가는 일반상담자와는 다른 측면을 갖는다. 왜냐하면 기독교(목회)상담은 정신적, 육체적 건강뿐만 아니라 영성적(spiritual)건강에도 관여해야하기 때문이다.
