This study conducts recapitulative investigation on Dowon Ryu, Seung-Guk's life, studies and thought who was the first generation scholar in Eastern philosophy after Korea's independence from Japan. I, the author, first review his journey on studies and find out that he lived his life in an open-minded and synthetic way. After that, I investigate the identity of Korean thought which was his lifelong study topic and its modern meaning. Throughout the process, I concentrate my study on the difference between Korean and Chinese thoughts and studies suggesting that the development of Confucianism and Taoism was an inseparable relation with Korean thought. Lastly, I introduce an opinion that neglecting real problems or needs of the times is not a living philosophy and contemplate diagnosing of practical problems and philosophical prospects about the future for mankind. I mainly describe various philosophical alternatives such as an issue on a human being as a main agent, etc.

이 글은 광복 이후, 한국 동양철학계의 제1세대 학자로 활약했던 도원 류승국의 삶과 학문, 사상에 대해 개괄적으로 고찰한 것이다. 먼저 60여 년에 걸친 학문 역정을 살폈다. 열린 사고와 회통적(會通的) 정신으로 일관된 삶을 부각시켰다. 이어 평생토록 연구 주제로 삼았던 한국사상의 정체(正體)와 현대적 의미에 대해 고찰하였다. 이 과정에서 한국사상과 중국사상의 차이점, 그리고 유학사상과 도가사상의 형성이 한국사상과 불가분의 관계에 있다는 학설에 대해 중점적으로 살폈다. 끝으로 현실 문제를 도외시하거나 시대적 요구를 소홀히 하는 철학은 산 철학이 아니라는 소신과 지론을 소개하고, 현실 문제에 대한 진단, 인류 미래에 대한 철학적 전망을 고찰하였다. 특히 인간주체 문제 등 여러 철학적 대안을 중점적으로 논술하였다.
