The purpose of this paper is to devise some methods of teaching which will enable all students of mixed abilities within a class to learn English. It first introduces the basic content of the 7th national curriculum for English which puts emphasis on differential treatment of students according to their ability levels. Next, it reviews the relevant literature in this field. It then explains how this experimental research was conducted -- e.g., subjects, length, instruments, teaching procedures, etc. In applying the procedures, it was pointed out that two principles were followed; (1) the textbook provided the main source of teaching materials; and (2) objectives were differentiated according to the students' abilities. This study showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the experimental group and the control group at the low level in the area of ‘performance score’. In addition, the survey conducted in both groups proved that, unlike the students in the control group, those in the experimental group were definitely given student-centered instruction and all made progress regardless of their abilities. Finally, suggestions are made based on the result of the study.

본 논문에서는 우리나라 중등학교에서 교육의 평등성과 개별성을 실현할 수 있는 한 가지 방법으로 효과적인 영어과 수준별 수업운영 방식을 모색하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 제 7차 영어과 교육과정의 중요내용을 소개하고 선행연구를 토대로 수준별 수업의 두 가지 형태인 학급 간 이동식 수준별 수업과 학급 내 수준별 수업에 대하여 비교한 후 후자인 학급 내 수준별 수업에 있어서 결정적 역할을 하는 소집단 활동을 토의한다. 계속해서 학급 내 수준별 수업의 효과를 검증하기 위하여 적용한 실험연구 방법, 내용 등에 관하여 구체적으로 설명하고 실험결과를 분석한다. 실험과정에서 적용한 두 가지 기본원칙은 교과서의 내용이 교수자료로 사용되었다는 것과 학습자의 능력에 따라 다른 교수목표를 설정하였다는 것이다. 연구결과 특별히 수행평가 성적에서 실험학급의 하위집단이 통제집단과 비교할 때 우수하였고 설문조사에서 실험집단 학생들이 학생중심으로 수업이 진행되었다는 지적과 함께 긍정적인 평가를 하고 있음을 알아낼 수 있었다. 마지막으로 실험결과를 바탕으로 중학교에서의 영어과 학급 내 수준별 수업을 효과적으로 하기위한 몇 가지 제언을 한다.
