The problem of the ‘duration’ and the constitution of the common notions in Spinoza Han, Byoung Jun This paper aims to explicate Spinoza’s notion of ‘duration’ presented in chapter 8 of Alexandre Lefebvre’s The Image of Law. I use, according to Lefebvre’s way, Deleuze’s interpretation of Spinoza, and try to keep up with the process in which Spinoza explains the ‘duration’. I draw from this process the conclusion that the ‘duration’ penetrates the internal and external aspects of modes. Also by way of considering the problem of ‘time’ from that process, I assert that the ‘time’ is not a mere illusion. In that respect Spinoza’s argument on ‘duration’ and ‘time’ generates the problem of the ‘encounter of modes’. Although this ‘encounter’ is seen as a contingency, it has a series of necessity. In order to demonstrate that the encounter is necessary, however, I assert that although both the ‘duration’ and the ‘time’ are only produced from an imagination of the human idea, these products of the imagination include a kind of essential elements, and this indicates that the modes as the affections of substance finally contain a kind of essential elements. And then I argue that the positive aspects of these encounters constitute the ‘common notions’. In this way, I conclude that the ‘common notions’ in Spinoza are the only way to vindicate the positive duration of the finite modes.

이 글의 목적은 알렉산더 리페브르의 『법-이미지』8장에서 다루는 스피노자의 지속을 다루는 부분에 대해서 보다 상세한 설명을 위한 것이다. 나는 리페브르의 방법에 따라서 들뢰즈의 스피노자 해석을 도입했고, 최대한 스피노자의 ‘지속’에 대한 해석과정의 궤적을 유지하려고 했다. 그 과정에서 ‘지속’이 양태들의 내적인 측면과 외적인 측면 모두를 관통할 것이라는 결과를 도출하고, ‘시간’의 문제를 다루며, ‘시간’이 단순히 허상의 문제로 귀결되는 것이 아니라고 주장할 것이다. ‘지속’과 ‘시간’에 대한 스피노자의 논의는 ‘양태들의 마주침’이라는 문제를 발생시킨다. ‘양태들의 마주침’의 문제는 그 마주침 자체로는 우연적인 것처럼 보이지만, 일련의 필연성을 가지고 있다. 그러나 그 마주침이 필연적이기 위해서는 ‘지속’이나 ‘시간’이 단지 인간 관념에 대한 상상의 산물이 아니라, 그 상상의 산물이 일종의 본질적인 요소를 포함하고 있다는 것, 즉 실체의 변용인 양태가 본질적인 부분을 포함하고 있다는 것을 밝혀야 한다. 그리고 이런 마주침들의 긍정적인 측면으로 ‘공통개념’이 구성된다는 것을 설명할 것이다. 이 과정에서 ‘공통개념’이 스피노자적 의미에서 유한한 양태들의 긍정적인 ‘지속’을 보장하는 유일한 방법이라고 주장할 것이다.
