Most criminological theories predict an inverse relationship between employment and crime, but teenagers’s involvement in work during the school year is correlated positively with delinquency. Whether the work-delinquency association is causal or spurious has been debated for a long time. This analysis tests three possible explanations for that correlation which has been examined in Western society, with Korean longitudinal data. The first is that differences in levels of delinquency between workers and nonworkers exist prior to employment. The second holds that working increases independence from parents, thereby reducing the controlling effect of parental influence. The third explanation, drawing on the theory of differential association, is that employment increases delinquent behavior by exposing adolescents to a wider network of peers, including delinquent peers. Analysis of data from waves 2 to waves 5 of the Korean Youth Panel Survey(KYPS) reveals a positive association between employment and some forms of delinquency, expecially alcohol and drinking, minor delinquency and serious delinquent behaviors. Preexisting factors, expecially prior delinquent behaviors than lower self-control, explains much, but not all, of the association. Although no support is found for the parental influence explanation, the remaining employment effect is explained by exposure delinquent peers and maladjustment to school.

일-비행의 관계가 인과적인지 아니면 허위적인지에 대해서는 오랫동안 논쟁이 이어져왔다. 이글에서는 그와 같은 관계에 대한 세 가지 가능한 설명이 우리나라 청소년의 아르바이트에 대해서도 적용 가능한지를 검증한다. 첫 번째 가설은 아르 바이트 경험이 있는 청소년과 그렇지 않은 청소년 간에는 이미 취업 경험 이전에 서로 다른 비행 수준이 존재한다는 것이다. 두 번째 가설은 아르바이트가 사회와의 유대를 약화시킴으로써 비행을 유도한다는 것이다. 청소년의 취업은 부모로부터의 독립을 증가시킴으로써 부모 감독이 미치는 통제 효과가 약화된다거나 학교생활에 대한 관여를 낮춰 학교 부적응에 이르게 함으로써 비행 행동이 야기된다는 것이다. 세 번째 설명은 취업과 비행 사이를 비행친구가 매개한다고 본다. 이 입장에서는 취업이 청소년을 비행 친구를 포함하는 보다 넓은 또래 집단 네트워크에 노출시킴 으로써 비행 행동을 증가시킨다고 설명한다. 한국청소년패널조사(KYPS) 자료는 취업과 비행 형태(특히 음주.흡연, 경비행, 중 비행) 간의 정적인 상관관계가 형성되고 있음을 보여주었다. 비행성이 높은 아이들 이 아르바이트를 더 선호한다는 선택성 가설이 그 관계의 상당 부분을 설명하고 있었다. 이러한 관계는 특히 음주.흡연, 경비행의 경우에 보다 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 선택성 요인 중에서는 선행하는 비행 경험이 낮은 자기 통제력보다 취업과 비행 간 관계를 이해하는 데 더 적합했다. 부모 영향 가설은 지지되지 않았으나, 대신 잔여적인 취업 효과는 비행 친구에의 노출, 학교 부적응에 의해 어느 정도 설명 가능한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 예외적으로 중비행의 경우, 비행 친구 가설이 다른 가설 에 비해 아르바이트 효과의 많은 부분을 설명해주고 있었다.
