The New Women in 1920s~1930s during the Japanese colonial period of Korea were used for various meanings including women who were educated experiencing new thoughts and new culture, women with western style looks, women who had the feminist consciousness of women's emancipation, and women who were engaged in new occupations etc. Their thoughts, living culture, physical appearance, behavior, occupations and so forth were a style of modern life and a mirror of reflecting society and culture of the time as well. In particular, the New Women's looks were a characteristic which differentiates them from the Old Women and played a leading role in forming public opinion, reflecting social issues and making them refer to public opinion.
Accordingly, the present study examined looks and makeup culture of the New Women who served as modern female subjects and signifier of attraction during the Japanese colonial period of Joseon in 1920s~1930s when modern society had its earliest beginning focused on ‘New Women’, ‘New Family’, ‘Women’, and ‘Byulgungon’ which were magazines published at that time, and looked back on characteristics and meanings of the New Women who stood at the center of a social discourse of fashion and vogue as modern body. It has allowed us to understand that the New Women's makeup culture onto which modern desires for female body were projected made women at those days reborn as main agents of modern consumption and that individual personalities were expressed and the base of creating fashion was made through makeup. In addition, it has found that the New Women's makeup culture is self-expression of modern subjects based on female beauty and individuality.
