The development of relations between South Korea and China has been very fast. Also, there have been exchanges and cooperations between Busan and China. Since the signing of a sister-city affiliation between Busan and Shanghai in 1993, Busan's relations with China has been further developed. China is currently the largest export market, import market and overseas investment of Busan. But, Busan continues to record trade deficit(export $2.8 billion, import $4.5 billion in 2011), as compared to Korea's total trade surplus(export $134.1 billion, import $86.4 billion in 2011) is in sharp contrast. Over the past 20 years, Busan's investment in China has gone through the process of change; Until 2005, most of the investment industry was in the manufacturing of leather bags, shoes, etc.; Since 2006, the major investment sectors has moved to Fabricated Metal Products, cars and trailers and other products, etc. Busan port and Gimhae International Airport, the reduction of the proportion of trade with China is a big problem. These fundamental cause of the Busan Port and Gimhae airport can be found in difficulties of access, long waiting time, deficiency of distribution complex, etc.

한-중 간의 비약적인 발전은 부산과 중국 간의 교류․협력관계로도 이어지고 있다. 부산-상하이 간의 자매결연 1993년 체결이후, 중국인 유학생 및 관광객 급증, 부산-중국간의 무역관계 증대 등으로 인해 부산의 對中관계는 더욱 활성화되고 있다. 중국은 현재 부산의 최대 수출시장, 최대 수입시장인 동시에 부산기업들의 최대 해외투자처가 되고 있다. 그러나 한국의 전체 무역액은 수입보다 수출(2011년 수출 1,341억 달러, 수입 864억 달러)이 많은 것과 비교하여, 부산은 수출보다 수입(2011년 수출 28억 달러, 수입 45억 달러)이 더 많은 것이 특징이다. 지난 20년간 부산의 對中투자 업종은 2005년까지는 가죽, 가방, 신발 등의 제조업이 대부분을 차지하였으나 2006년 이후 금속가공제품, 자동차 및 트레일러, 기타제품 등의 제조업 등으로 전환 중인 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 부산항과 김해공항의 對中무역 비중 감소 추세의 원인은 부산항과 김해공항이 접근성이 떨어지고 대기시간이 크며 물류배후단지 조성이 제대로 이루어지지 않음이 근본적인 원인은 아닌지 되새겨볼 필요가 있다.
