This paper examines the Verde-amarelismo, the literary movement in search of Brazilian nationalism that arose at the time of Brazilian modernism in the early twentieth century, as opposed to “nationalism Frenchified” of Oswald de Andrade. Indeed, the Antropofagismo, the longest movement among the modernists schools, and Verde-amarelismo, the first draft for the Integralism, were main currents of opinion in terms of establishment of a national ideology. However, both movements had common goal: the search for Brazilian national identity. Starting from the fact that Plinio Salgado was one of the most important members of the Verde-amarelismo, this study observes what was the significance of his first novel The Stranger in the area of literature and also how occurred the passage of literary character to political character taking the Verde-amarelismo at the base of his ideals.

본고에서는 오스바우지 지 앙드라지의 “프랑스화된 민족주의”에 반대하여 20세기초 브라질 모더니즘 운동 내부에서 일어났던 민족주의 문학 운동에 대해 고찰하고자한다. 실제로, 모더니즘 학파 중 가장 오랜 기간 동안 지속된 식인주의와 인테그럴리즘의 전신인 베르지-아마렐리즈무는 국가적 이상향 확립과 관련한 주요 이념기조였다. 그러나 두 운동 모두 브라질의 국가 정체성의 탐색이라는 공통의 목표를 지니고 있었다. 베르지-아마렐리즈무의 가장 핵심적인 일원 중 한 사람이었던 쁠리니우 사우가두의 첫 소설 『이방인』이 브라질 문단에서 지녔던 의미와 베르지-아마렐리즈무라는 사상적 배경을 바탕으로 문인에서 정치인으로의 변화 과정에 대해 고찰해보고자 한다.
