Recently, as the number of multicultural immigrants has been growing rapidly in the Korean society, the cultural conflict has been talked about frequently as a social problem, Being aware of such, Korean churches have been emphasizing the missionary meanings and tasks for them ever since a few years ago, and trying to develop and provide a wide variety of programs. On the other hand, it is also true that social movement was separated from missionary work and that a distance has been existing against the multicultural immigrants’settlement in the Korean society except those churches of progressive inclination. As such, it is aimed in this paper to emphasize the leading position that churches should take in supporting the multicultural immigrants’ settlement in the Korean society. In other words, emphasis is being placed not only on playing a supplementary role where assistance is to be provided at government’s level but also on supporting their settlement in the Korean society by utilizing human resources. Through such activities, at the current moment of the Korean society’s transition to a multicultural society, it is anticipated that social conflict will be somewhat lessened while some missionary effects can be induced.

최근 한국사회에 이주민들이 급증하면서 문화적 갈등이 점차 사회문제로 논의되고 있으며, 국가차원에서 다양한 서비스를 제공하여 정착에 도움을 주고 있다. 이에 몇 년 전부터 한국교회는 그들에 대한 선교적 의미와 과제를 강조하고 있고, 다양한 종류의 프로그램을 개발하여 제공하고자 노력하고 있다. 다른 측면에서는 사회운동과 선교를 분리하기도 하여 진보적인 성향의 교회를 제외하고는 이주민의 한국사회정착에 거리를 두고 있던 것도 사실이다. 이에 본고는 이주민들이 한국사회의 정착지원에 교회가 중심이 되어야 함을 강조하고자 한다. 즉 정부차원에서의 지원에 보완적 역할을 감당해야 할 것은 물론, 인적·물적 자원 활용을 통해 그들이 한국사회의 정착하는데 지원해야 함을 강조한다. 이를 위해 심리적·정서적 안정, 인적·물적 자원, 사회적응, 전문가양성 등의 지원을 함으로써 한국사회가 열린 다문화사회로 가는 현 시점에서 사회적 갈등을 조금 더 줄여갈 수 있을 것이며, 선교적 효과를 이끌어낼 수 있을 것을 기대한다.
