This study tried to show a way the materialized Korean tradition character design shall follow, by investigating the existing popular character styles. First, it compared the famous character design features of domestic and foreign to the character design features based on Korean traditional culture. Degrees of simplification, expressions of strong originality, bold omission of appearances, and friendly representations have quite similar qualities to the popular characters. However, they simply use traditional outfit without any impressive originality which determine style of the characters, or have similar facial features. Also, in terms of planning, storyline, and wide availability, traditional characters are significantly in lower rank. The direction of character design based on Korean traditional culture to go has four features. First, in the figure selection process, it shall choose a person who is able to represent the area and has unique originality that express the identity of Korean traditional culture. Second, in the aspect of style and production technique, one shall include two proportional figure, dearness, maternal instinct, friendliness, strong identity, and fun element. Third, it shall have structural planning, story composition, and expandability which allows using the character through diverse media. Forth, with precise expressions of traditional props, clothes, and tools, it shall have natural expression of Korean traditional culture in it. Thus, using these factors as background, further efforts are required to excavate the likelihood of the characters represents Korean culture image based on global perspective.

본 연구에서는 기존에 인기를 끌고 있는 캐릭터 스타일을 연구해 봄으로써 앞으로 한국 전통문화를 소재로 한 캐릭터 디자인의 나아갈 방향을 제시 한다. 먼저 국내외 인기 캐릭터 디자인의 특징과 한국 전통문화를 소재로 한 인물 캐릭터디자인의 특징을 비교해 보면 단순화 된 정도, 강한 개성의 표현, 이목구비의 과감한 생략, 친근감의 표현 등은 국내외 인기캐릭터와 비등한 수준으로 발전했지만, 캐릭터의 스타일을 결정짓는 강한 개성 없이 단순히 전통복장만을 사용하거나, 비슷한 이목구비를 가지고 있는 부분이 많다. 또한 기획력과 스토리구성, 다양한 활용성 측면에서는 크게 떨어지는 것을 볼 수 있다. 한국 전통문화를 소재로 한 인물 캐릭터 디자인의 나아갈 방향을 정리하면 첫째, 소재 인물의 선택에서 지역을 대표할 수 있고, 한국 전통문화의 정체성을 표현할 수 있는 개성이 강한 인물을 선택해야 한다. 둘째, 스타일과 제작기법적 측면에서 2등신의 비율, 귀여움, 모성본능, 친근감, 강한 개성, 재미의 요소 등을 담고 있어야 된다. 셋째, 짜임새 있는 기획과 스토리구성과 다양한 매체를 통해 활용할 수 있는 확장성을 가져야 한다. 넷째, 전통 소품, 의복, 도구의 정확한 표현으로 캐릭터 속에 한국의 전통문화가 자연스럽게 포함되어 있어야 한다. 따라서 이러한 요소들을 바탕으로 범세계적 시각에 기초한 한국적 문화 상징이미지로서의 가능성을 발굴하는 노력이 필요하다.
