Korean calligraphy still lies in the premodern value system not as modern․contemporary art. Self-cultivated approaches such as Seoyeogiin (A handwriting reflects the personality of a person) etc. is the mainstream of calligraphy and discourse that work quality cannot be discussed if not preceded by great personality is formed independent of the practical realities of calligraphy. However, a view recognizing ‘calligraphy’ as ‘the form objectifying sentiment’ or ‘meaningful form’ in terms of 'autonomy', the modernity indicator of art is also presented. It is the argument that self-cultivated perception should be denied and beauty itself, calligraphy itself should be understood as art regardless of personality or practicality, efficacy etc. in calligraphy understood as ‘meaningful form’ from the standpoint of the theory of taste. However, while the self-cultivated view of calligraphy that may result in denying calligraphy as modern․contemporary art, perceiving calligraphy as dependent on personality or personal cultivation, the taste theoretical view of calligraphy did not present a reasonable answer on how can secure and prescribe autonomy of calligraphy itself. This dual recognition for calligraphy seems to act as the cause of stagnation of Korean calligraphy in line with market force of capital. This thesis attempts to examine the possibility of communication of calligraphic and non-calligraphic relationships by studying the relationship with the self-cultivated view of calligraphy focusing on autonomy as the indicator of modern․contemporary art. The issue of autonomy and the possibility of communication can be said to be raised as ‘calligraphy as education’ based on self-cultivation and ‘calligraphy as art’ in calligraphy. If autonomy can be granted to calligraphy like the other arts and the possibility of communication can be secured focusing on the autonomy, the possibility of revival of calligraphy as today’s art can be secured in the mixture of discourse and indicators of Modernity and Post-Modernity and in the strict reality where the logic of capital dominates the market. Therefore, discourse on how calligraphy is conceptually defined in the current sense and can grant modern artistry to calligraphy is urgently required to be discussed.

전통예술로서의 서예는 근ㆍ현대 예술로서가 아니라, 여전히 전근대적 가치체계 안에 놓여있다. 書如其人 등의 수양론적 접근이서예의 주류를 이루며, 훌륭한 인격이 선행되지 않으면 작품성은 논의할 바가 못 된다는 담론이, 서예의 현실적 실체들과는 무관하게 형성되어 있다. 하지만 ‘서예’를 예술의 근대성 지표인 ‘자율성’의 측면에서 ‘정감을 대상화한 형식’ 또는 ‘의미 있는 형식’으로 인식하는 견해가 제출되기도 한다. 취미론적 견지에서 ‘의미 있는 형식’으로 이해된 서예에서는 수양론적 인식은 부정되고, 인성이나 실용, 효능 등과는 무관하게 美 그 자체, 서예 그 자체를 예술로 이해해야 한다는 주장이다. 그렇지만 수양론적 서예관이 서예를 인성이나 개인적 수양에 종속된 것으로 인식하며 근현대 예술로서 서예를 부정하는 결과를 낳을 수 있는 반면, 취미론적 서예관은 서예 그 자체의 자율성을 어떻게 확보하고 규정지을 것인가에 대한 합리적 대답을 내놓고 있지 못한 실정이다. 이러한 서예에 대한 이중적 인식은 자본의 시장논리와 맞물려 한국서예의 침체의 원인으로 작용하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 본 논문에서는 서예를 근ㆍ현대적 예술의 지표로서 자율성을 중심으로, 수양론적 서예관과의 관계를 고찰함으로써 서예와 非서예적 관계들의 소통가능성을 검토해 보려고 한다. 자율성과 소통가능성의 문제는 서예에 있어서 ‘예술로서의 서예’와 수양론에 근거한 ‘교육으로서의 서예’로 대두된다고 할 수 있다. 근대사회의 여타의 예술처럼 서예에도 자율성을 부여할 수 있다면, 그리고 그 자율성을 중심으로 소통가능성을 확보할 수 있다면 Modernity와 Post-Modernity의 담론과 지표들의 혼재 속에서, 그리고 자본의 논리가 시장을 지배하는 엄정한 현실 속에서, 오늘의 예술로서 서예가 부흥할 수 있는 가능성을 확보할 수 있을 것이다. 그러므로 현재적 의미에서 서예를 어떻게 개념적으로 정의하며, 서예에게 현대적 예술성을 부여해 줄 것인가에 대한 담론의 논의의 시급성을 요구한다고 하겠다.
