This study intends to estimate the time the newly excavated relics, letters named Sinchangmaengssimyo-Eonga’, were written and examine Korean linguistic characteristics and values of the letters in terms of phoneme, gramma, and lexicon. A total of two letters were excavated in Daejeon, and the contents of the letters clearly show that they were sent from the a man named, Singeol Na to his wife Sinchangmaengssi(Ms. Maeng of Sinchang). Also, they are estimated to be written at least around the 1490's considering the fact that the birth date (1461~1524) of the husband, Singeol Na , and the place name in the letter, Yeongan-do. The palatalization, k-weakness and deletion, and the use of the auxiliary preposition, “이라(ira)”, that appear in the letters enable such an estimation. For this, they are the oldest-dated letters in existence written at least 50 years before the previously known letters, and they are quite valuable in terms of Korean linguistics particularly as they are the letters written in Hangeul(Korean alphabet) in the 15th century. For they are the materials from the 15th century, a number of existing ideas of Korean linguistics such as the final ending, “소 (haso)”, and double spelling should be newly discussed. Furthermore, these letters draw special attention concerning the spread of Korean characters. From the fact that these refined letters were exchanged between a couple in the country in the 1490’s, it is possible to assume that Huminjeongeum, the Korean script, has already spread among the general public at the time. It will be necessary to shed a new light on the invention and proclamation of Huminjeongeum and the channel that it was propagated to the general public.

이 논문은 새로 발굴된 ‘신창맹씨묘출토언간’에 대해 필사 연대를 추정해 보고 그것에 나타난 국어학적인 특징과 가치를 음운, 문법, 어휘 측면에서 살펴본 것이다. 대전 지역에서 발굴된 이 편지는 전체 2건으로 구성되어 있고, 편지의 내용을 볼 때 남편인 ‘나신걸’이 아내인 ‘신창맹씨’에게 보낸 편지가 분명하다. 또, 신창맹씨의 남편인 ‘나신걸’의 생몰년(1461~1524)과 편지의 내용에 나타난 ‘영안도’라는 지명 등을 감안할 때, 이 편지는 늦어도 1490년대에 쓰인 것으로 판단된다. 편지에 나타나는 구개음화나 ㄱ-약화‧탈락, 그리고 보조조사 ‘이라’ 등의 용법들을 통해 이러한 추정을 가능하게 한다. 그러므로 기존에 알려진 한글 편지보다 적어도 50여 년 이상 앞선 最古의 자료이고, 특히 15세기에 쓰인 한글 편지라는 점에서 국어학적으로 매우 가치가 있는 자료이다. 이 편지가 15세기 자료라면 기존의 ‘소체’ 종결어미, 그리고 중철 표기 등 여러 가지 국어학적인 내용에 대해 새롭게 논의되어야 할 것이다. 나아가 이 편지는 문자의 보급 측면에서도 비상한 관심을 끈다. 1490년대에 지방의 한 부부 사이에 이렇게 정제된 한글 편지가 오고갈 수 있다는 사실에서 이 시기에 이미 훈민정음이 일반 백성에게도 널리 퍼졌다는 것을 보여 준다. 훈민정음의 창제와 반포, 그리고 그것을 일반 백성에게 보급하는 경로 등도 새롭게 조명되어야 할 필요가 있을 것이다.
