Along with recent developments in science and technology, the importance of crime scene investigation and analysis such as the examination of fingerprints and footprints is increasing by the day. However, Korea still lacks an established system of scientific investigation and specialized techniques to resolve bizarre and violent crimes that continue to occur, including the serial killings in Hwaseong. Advanced countries have long been using scientific techniques - criminal profiling and specialized investigatory systems (VICAP, ViCLAS, HITS, etc.) - in the site investigation and criminal identification of serial killings and other violent crimes. Profiling is a technique that analyzes criminal patterns by inferring the offender’s profile from physical or psychological evidence left behind in the crime scene. Among the specific types of profiling used in different countries, the Crime Scene Analysis of the FBI in the U.S., Investigative Psychology by Professor D. Canter of the University of Liverpool in U.K., and Geographic Profiling developed by D. Rossmo of Canada are the leading examples. In terms of the feasibility of profiling in actual investigations, there is more positive assessment of objective profiling, which focuses on the time, place and other environmental elements of the crime, than the FBI method of subjective analysis of internal, mental or psychological characteristics. This study introduces profiling techniques that are applicable in crime scene investigations, and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of each technique. It also presents some profiling case studies that are relevant to Korea's circumstances to examine the workability of spatial analysis in investigations. Furthermore, the study discusses the use of Geographic Information Systems and information management methods as policy proposals.

최근 과학기술의 발전과 함께 현장지문과 족적 등 범죄수사에 있어서 현장조사 및 분석의 중요성이 날로 증가하고 있다. 선진 각국에서는 오래 전부터 연쇄살인 등 강력범죄 현장조사 및 범인식별을 위한 과학적 수사기법으로 프로파일링과 전문화된 수사체제 (VICAP, ViCLAS, HITS 등)를 적극 활용하고 있다. 프로파일링은 범죄현장에 유류된 물리적 증거나 심리학적 증거를 통하여 범인의 윤곽을 추정하는 범죄자 유형 분석기법이다. 각국에서 운영되고 있는 프로파일링의 형태는 미국 FBI에서 개발한 범죄 현장 분석기법과 영국 리버풀대학 D. Canter교수의 수사심리학적 분석기법, 캐나다 D. Rossmo가 개발한 지리학적 프로파일링이 대표적이다. 프로파일링의 수사상 유용성 측면에서 FBI 방식의 내면적, 정신적, 심리적 특성에 대한 주관적 평가보다는 범행 장소와 시간 등 환경적 요소를 중시하는 객관적 프로파일링을 긍정적으로 평가하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 범죄현장조사에서 활용 가능한 프로파일링 기법들을 소개하고 이 기법들의 장단점을 분석하였다. 또 우리나라의 실정에 맞는 프로파일링 사례연구에서 공간 분석의 수사상 유용성과 화성연쇄살인사건 등을 분석하였으며, 정책적 제언으로 지리정보시스템의 활용과 정보관리에 대해 논의하였다.
