The consideration is a treatise viewing on Kim Seong-Sook's political belief which he took active work at the foremost of anti-Japanese Movement in Chinese region as a member of independentista under the Japanese Empire. I tried to consider his political concept and connection to national buddhism in this paper. So far the outlook of study on Kim Seong-Sook was dominated by progressive line of socialism. I accepted this point of view basically in this consideration. However I reilluminated his political activities for period from returning to Korea after 8.15 Liberation to pasting away in 1969. And I tried to seek for political ideal within reillumination, extracted connection to national buddhism in it. In the purpose the focus on the paper written is as following. Firstly he did continuous independent movement from 3.1 movement to liberation in 1945. Here his national movement and independent movement by itself were intimated with nationalism. Secondly nationalism was strongly intervened on the base of his political activities for twenty years after liberation. Thirdly he was monk's statue while he was doing anti-Japanese movement and political activities and had identity as a buddhist. In such premise I calls national buddhism as the origin of Kim Seong-Sook's anti-Japanese and political activities. I viewed Mahayana Buddhism which is the buddhist ideal and the historical accumulation of the buddhist socialization in being designated as a buddhist does national buddhism with the activities for the nation.

본 고찰은 일제하 불교계 독립운동가의 일원으로, 중국 지역의 항일운 동의 최일선에서 활약한 김성숙의 정치이념을 살핀 논고이다. 그러면서 필자는 이 논고에서 그의 정치이념과 민족불교와 유관함을 살피려고 하 였다. 지금껏 김성숙에 대해서는 진보적인 사회주의 노선이라는 연구가 지배 적이었다. 본 고찰에서도 기본적으로는 이를 수용하였다. 다만, 그가 8.15 해방 이후 귀국해서부터 입적하였던 1969년까지의 기간의 정치 활동을 재조명하고, 그 재조명 속에서 정치이념을 찾고, 그것에서 민족불교와의 상관성을 추출하려고 했다. 이런 취지에서 집필된 본고찰의 초점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 그는 3.1운 동부터 1945년까지 지속적인 독립운동을 하였다는 점이다. 여기에서 그 의 민족운동, 독립운동의 내용은 저절로 민족주의와 긴밀하다. 둘째, 그 의 해방이후 20여 년 간의 정치활동의 저변에서도 민족주의가 강열하게 개재되었다. 셋째, 그가 항일운동, 정치활동을 할 때의 신분은 승려이었 고 불교도로서의 정체성을 갖고 있었다는 점이다. 이런 전제하에서 필자는 김성숙의 항일운동, 정치활동의 근원을 민족 불교라고 부른다. 필자는 민족불교를 불교도가 민족을 위한 활동을 하는 것으로 지칭하면서, 그것이 불교의 이상인 대승불교, 불교사회화의 역사 적인 체화라고 본다.
