Beopindang Beokyan Daijongsa is a Buddhist Priest who made significant contributions to settling the new Jogye Order, which was founded in 1962. Buddhist Priest Beokyan was invited to the Joongang Religion Meeting of the Jogye Order and took charge of the 2nd and 3rd chairman for consecutive three times over about decade. He was the first Buddhist Priest who carried out his duties as a chairman, in history of the Jogye Order maintained for a half century. While taking charge of the chairman of the Joongang Religion Meeting, who had the right to the law constitution, he took the active initiative to constitute the law indispensable for stabilizing and prospering the new religious sectors. His excellent ability in communication and administrative sectors and his good character as a Buddhist Priest made him work as the chairman for a long time. Actually, he developed his ability stated above, before he left his home for a Buddhist temple and became a Buddhist monk. Buddhist Priest Beokyan was a Confucian scholar who was very well- informed to Confucianism as one of compulsory academic studies that every Korean elite group in the Feudal Age was supposed to study. While learning Confucianism, he came to have a habit of showing love and respects toward student learners, mentors and seniors. And, he can learn a lesson from juniors how important it is to have a modest attitude. After becoming a Buddhist monk, he continued to show such attitude and left the impression as a good and moral Confucian scholar. In this regard, this research thesis is very significant in that this thesis opens the first chapter to clarify Beokyan's life, ideas and roles as the religious chairman based on newspaper articles or religious section minutes and disciples' testimony on him.

법인당 벽안 대종사는 통도사 출신 승려로, 1962년 설립한 신생 종단 조계종이 안정적으로 정착하는데 공이 많은 인물이다. 벽안은 국가의 국 회에 해당하는 조계종 중앙종회 초대 2대 3대에 걸친 10여 년 동안 모 두 세 차례에 걸쳐 의장을 역임했다. 이는 50년 조계종 역사상 유일하 다. 재직 기간 동안 그는 법을 제정하는 권한을 지닌 중앙종회 의장으로 서 신생 종단 조직의 안정과 번영을 위해 꼭 필요한 법을 만드는데 큰 기여를 했다. 그가 종회의장으로 오랫동안 재직할 수 있었던 이유는 탁 월한 의사진행 능력, 승려로서 훌륭한 품성, 뛰어난 행정력 때문이다. 그의 이런 능력은 출가하기 전부터 형성됐다. 벽안은 봉건시대 한국사 회 엘리트들이 필수적으로 배우는 유학에 밝은 유학자였다. 그는 유학을 통해 공부하는 학생을 귀하게 여기는 자세, 스승과 선배에 대한 존경심, 아랫사람에게 겸손한 품성을 배우고 몸에 익혔다. 출가 이후에도 이같은 자세와 마음은 계속 유지돼 유학자와 선사(禪師)의 품성을 고루 갖출 수 있었다. 이 논문은 제자들의 증언과 신문 기록, 종회 회의록 등을 통해 나타난 벽안의 생애와 사상, 종회의장으로서 역할을 규명한 첫 번 째 글이라는 점에서 의미가 크다.
