The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the smuggling and sex trafficking of Korean women to the United States. Reviewing the case of the smuggling and trafficking of Korean Women, this study discusses the unique character of unauthorized Korean immigration and explores the causes of Korean Women Smuggling and Sex Trafficking. In sum, the study indicates that; 1) individual migration and smuggling are voluntary acts; trafficked persons may also begin their trip voluntarily, but coercion or fraud may turn them into trafficking victims; 2) traffickers and smugglers pay U.S. military personnel to bring Korean women into the U.S. through sham marriages; recent changes in Korean laws on prostitution (2004) pushed many Korean prostitutes out of Korea into U.S. (i.e., crime displacement effect); 3) many of Korean women who are smuggled and sex trafficked process do out of economic or financial duress (push side); the new anti-prostitution stance by the government has significantly increased the “supply” of Korean women to move into the United States voluntarily; the presence of a large immigrant population in the U.S. with communities could be a pull factor of Korean Women. Finally, the study concludes with a brief discussion of the sex trafficking research’s limitation and a recommendation of further study on this issue.

이 연구의 목적은 성매매를 목적으로 미국으로 밀입국 및 강제 이주 된 한국 여성들에 대한 내용을 고찰하는 것이다. 즉, 이 연구에서는 성매매 목적의 밀입국 및 강제 이주 한국 여성에 대한 선행 연구사례에 대한 검토와 함께, 불법 이민 한국 여성의 특성에 대해서 논의하고, 그 원인을 모색해 보았다. 이 연구의 결과, 첫째, 미국으로의 개인적인 이주 및 밀입국은 자발적인 것이다. 강제 이주 된 여성들도 처음에는 자발적인 입국이었지만, 강제 또는 기만행위로 인해 그들은 강제 이주 성매매의 피해자가 된다. 둘째, 여성을 밀입국 또는 강제 이주시켰던 사람들은 미군들과의 위장결혼을 통해서 여성들을 미국으로 데려오는 대가를 미군들에게 지불했고, 최근에 성매매와 관련된 개정된 “성매매 특별법”의 시행은 한국의 성매매 여성들을 한국에서 미국으로 가도록 했다(범죄전이효과). 셋째, 밀입국 및 강제 이주 된 많은 한국 여성들은 경제적 혹은 재정적 어려움과 압박의 상태에 있으며, ‘성매매특별법’은 이들 여성들을 자발적으로 미국으로 이주하도록 하는 요인으로 작용했다. 또한 미국 내 많은 한국 이민 지역사회는 이들 여성들을 유인하는 요인으로 작용했을 수 있다. 마지막으로 이 연구는 성매매 목적의 밀입국 및 강제 이주 여성에 대한 연구의 한계, 그리고 향후 연구를 위한 제언을 하였다.
