In this paper, investigated was the progress of industrial hollowing out in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region by utilizing regional manufacturing industrial hollowing out index. The manufacturing industrial hollowing-out index was calculated as a weighted average of three indices: growth index, employment index and FDI index, based on the amount of FDI, industrial employment, and industrial production, respectively, of the region. This paper demonstrated that the industrial hollowing-out has in effect commenced since 2004 in the region although it was still at a nascent stage, as of 2009. Nevertheless, regional administrative bodies and firms in the region need to be more proactive in order to prevent the problems arising from further progress of industrial hollowing in the region. In this regard, efforts for upgrading regional industrial structure through an expansion of transportation and logistics network, creation favorable production environment for related industries, provision of incentives to new firms, deregulation of administrative red tapes, etc. In this paper, Section II analyses the literature review of the Korea's industrial hollowing-out. Section III examines the manufacturing industrial hollowing-out index. Actual analyses of the extent to which industrial hollowing-out have been taking place in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region are eventuated in Section IV. Section V is reserved for concluding remarks and implications.
