- Diaspora studies have been divided into the politico-classic model that focuses on objective and collective experience like forced migration and persecution and the personal modern model that focuses on individual’s state of being disconnected to both home and host countries. Thus, the essential characteristic of diaspora is being homeless. By contrast, the essential characteristic of transnationalism is simultaneous connectedness to both home and host countries. In this article, I regard mobility and connectedness as the two major dimensions that distinguish diaspora from transnationalism. Diaspora is the state where both mobility and connectedness are low, while transnationalism is the state where both mobility and connectedness are high. The current situations of overseas Koreans are mixed states where both diasporic and transnational states coexist. Thus, it is a wise strategy to use selectively a relevant concept for appropriate situations rather than use one single concept for different situations. Also, in order to make studies of Koreans abroad more practical and responsive to reality, we need to develop micro- and meso-level models and theories and conduct more empirical research to analyze concrete cases of overseas Koreans.

- 디아스포라연구는 강제이주와 박해와 같은 객관적이고 집합적인 경험에 초점을 둔 정치고전모형과 모국과 거주국 어디에도 소속되지 못한 개인의 정신상태에 초점을 둔 사적현대모형으로 분화되어 진행되었다. 따라서 디아스포라의 핵심적 특징은 ‘홈리스 상태’라고 할 수 있다. 반면 초국가주의는 모국과 거주국에 동시에 ‘연결되어 상태’를 핵심적 특징으로 불 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 이동성과 모국-거주국과의 연계성을 디아스포라와 초국가주의를 구분하는 두 차원으로 보고, 이동성과 연계성이 높은 상태를 초국가주의, 이동성과 연계성이 낮은 상태를 디아스포라로 구분한다. 현재 세계 여러 곳의 재외동포의 상황은 디아스포라와 초국가주의적 상태가 혼재되어 있어서 어느 하나의 관점으로 모든 상황을 설명하려하기보다 상황에 맞게 선택적으로 적절한 개념을 사용하는 것이 현명하다. 그리고 보다 실용적이고 현실에 부합된 재외한인연구를 하기 위해서는 미시적이고 중범위 수준의 모델과 이론을 개발하고 보다 많은 경험적 연구를 실행해서 구체적 현상을 분석하는 자세가 필요하다.

- 140여개 국에 분산된 세계 한민족을 연구 대상으로 하고 이들 재외동포의 역사, 사회 문화 등의 모든 현상을 연구하고 재외 동포들의 경제생활 법적 문제 등을 연구함을 목적으로 한다. 따라서 재외 한인 연구회는 그 기반이 사회과학 인문과학 전 분야에 해당한다. 재외한인학회는 사회과학 인문과학의 모든 분야 학자들이 어느 나라에 거주하는 동포이건 관계없이 우리 동포를 연구 대상으로 한 학자들이 모임으로 회원들간의 상호 관심분야를 토의하고 상호 자료를 교환하여 각자의 연구 시야를 확대하고 학제간의 연구를 통하여 재외한인 연구의 진일보를 그 목적으로 한다. 더 나아가 한인 동포를 연구한 외국 학자와 긴밀한 연계를 갖고 공동 연구를 추진한다.
