In contrast to the literature which emphasizes education systems to resolve the influence of inherited capital on economic activities, we examine the relative influences of the two dimensions on wage. Our regression analyses, using panel data on the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (2002‐2008), show that the effectiveness of education systems on wage disappears when we control family capital. Our further analysis of mediation effects between education systems and family capital illustrates that father’s education much more directly influences wage with little mediated relations by membership of elite universities or exam performance. We therefore suggest that policy makers having an aim to improve the effectiveness of education should pay more attention to the role of family capital, since family capital marginalizes meritocracy institutionalized in education system.

기존 연구가 경제활동에 있어 상속된 자본의 영향력을 완화하기 위하여 교육의 중요성을 강조하는 반면, 본 연구는 두 요인의 상대적 영향력을 임금을 대상으로 비교분석 하였다. 본 논문은 한국노동소득패널데이터(2002‐2008)를 계량 분석한 결과, 가족자본을 통제하였을 경우 교육제도의 임금차이에 대한 영향력이 사라짐을 확인하였다. 임금차이에 대한 교육제도와 가족자본의 매개관계를 추가 분석한 결과, 아버지의 교육수준은 임금차이에 보다 직접적으로 영향을 미치는 반면, 엘리트대학 또는 시험성적 등에 의한 매개효과는 미미한 것을 발견하였다. 따라서 본 논문은 가족자본이 교육제도의 특징인 능력주의를 제한하고 있다는 점에서 교육제도의 효율성을 제고하려는 정책결정자들은 ‘가족자본’의 역할에 보다 관심을 기울이는 것이 필요함을 제안한다.
