This study was conducted to examine the symbolic cases of Korean traditional patterns as therapeutic meaning and explore the possibility to be applied to art therapy. This study was designed to present its availability in the field of art therapy programs by discovering the necessity of research itself, the theoretical study of traditional patterns, the traditional patterns as symbolic meaning, and the value of traditional patterns. Understanding the traditional patterns of Korea can be not only to learn the knowledge of patterns, but also to recognize how our ancestors tried to reflect the value and wishes of their lives on all objects around themselves. It is also possible to discover the meaning of archetypal symbolism that expresses the collective wishes of a group by understanding the traditional patterns. The purpose of traditional patterns is based on the fundamental desires of our ancestors, not on a simple function for decoration. Also, looking for the materials that matched the origins of various wishes of individuals or groups and applying symbolic meaning to them, they tried to believe in homeopathic rituals that ‘Similar things give birth to similar things,’ or that ‘Results and causes are similar.’ This study tried to prove that traditional patterns not only reflect profound mental activities but also have theoretical power on the origins of human wishes by understanding the traditional patterns of various animals. Based on the meanings that these traditional patterns have, it is hoped that the practical values of traditional patterns can be enhanced in the field of art therapy programs in near future.

본 연구는 한국전통문양을 통해본 치유적 의미로서의 상징사례를 알아보고 이것이 현재 예술치료현장에서 활용할 수 있는 가능성을 모색하고자 한 것이다. 본 논문은 연구의 필요성, 전통문양의 이론적 고찰, 전통문양을 통해본 상징의미, 그리고 전통문양의 가치의 발견을 통해 예술치료 프로그램 구성에서 활용할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하는 것으로 구성하였다. 한국의 전통문양을 이해한다는 것은 단순히 문양에 대한 지식의 차원을 넘어 우리 선조들이 지향했던 가치와 삶의 소망을 주변의 사물을 통해 어떻게 담고 싶어 했는지를 아는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 전통문양의 이해를 통해 집단의 소망을 표현한 원형적 상징의 의미를 발견할 수 있다. 전통문양의 그려진 목적은 단순히 장식적인 기능이 아닌 선조들의 본원적인 소망에 근거한 것이며 개인 혹은 집단의 다양한 소망 기원과 부합되는 소재를 찾고 상징적 의미를 부여하면서 이를 통해 동종주술(同種呪術), 즉 ‘비슷한 것은 비슷한 것을 낳는다’거나 ‘결과는 원인을 닮는다’ 라는 믿음을 가지려 했다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 전통문양의 이해를 통해 전통문양이 인간의 소망기원에 대한 깊은 정신활동이며 치유적 힘을 가지고 있음을 동물문 등 다양한 사례를 통해 증명하고자 했다. 이러한 전통문양이 가지고 있는 의미를 바탕으로 오늘날 예술치료 프로그램현장에서 전통문양의 활용가치를 높일 수 있기를 기대해 본다.
