As aging society has come these days in Japan, population aging becomes an important social issue. In such a social background, many studies and surveys on elderly people are reported as the importance of elderly people is recognized. Also, tourism studies on elderly people are actively conducted in tourism sector as it is expected that elderly people will actively participate in tourism activities. However, although there are many leisure activities that elderly people can choose, why do they need tourism activities? What functions are operated in tourism? This study considers that identifying these questions is a fundamental question of tourism for elderly people and an important subject. In this study, it therefore attempted to identify what kind of functions does tourism has for elderly people and especially focused on personal relations with elderly people in tourism. To define the purpose of this study, it identified the current status of tourism for elderly people and conducted a survey on how the exchange promotion of the travel agency and personal relations with elderly people are performed by allowing targeted elderly people to participate in tourism activities three times. According to the result, it indicated that tourism has a function as a meeting place for elderly people. Elderly people who met together for the first time during the trip independently established personal relations. In this way, tourism has a function which promotes non-daily personal relations and connects people who have different social and cultural backgrounds. Also, tourism for elderly people has a characteristic which keeps personal relations even after completing the trip. Therefore, this study demonstrates that tourism plays a role in raising the possibility of forming and re-establishing different personal relations compared to personal relations established during the trip.

今日、日本では高齢社会が到来しており、人口の高齢化が重要な社会問題になっている。こうした状況のなか、高齢者の重要性が認識され、高齢者をめぐる研究・調査が多くなされている。観光分野でも高齢者の観光への積極的な消費が期待され、高齢者を対象とする観光研究が多く行われているが、これらの研究では高齢者が観光を行うことが前提となっている。しかし、高齢者が選択できる余暇活動は多くあるにもかかわらず、なぜ、高齢者は観光を必要とするのか。そこにはどのような働きが作用しているのか。これらを明らかにすることは、高齢者観光の根本的な問いであり、重要な研究課題であると考えられる。以上の問題意識から本研究では、高齢者にとって観光がどのような機能を果たしているのかを明らかにすることを目的とした。特に、本研究では観光の場における高齢者同士の人間関係に着目した。この研究目的を明らかにするために、高齢者向け旅行会社の取り組みの事例を通して、高齢者観光の現状を把握した。また、高齢者向けツアーに3回参加し、旅行会社による高齢者の交流促進に関する工夫と高齢者同士の人間関係の様相について調査を行った。その結果、高齢者にとって観光は出会いの場としての機能を果たしていることが明らかになった。観光の場で初めて出会う高齢者同士は、旅行会社による交流促進の工夫によって、主体的に人間関係を構築していた。このように、観光は非日常的な人間関係を生み出し、異質な社会的・文化的背景をもつ人々を同質性という切り口で結びつける機能を持っていた。また、高齢者観光は観光から戻ってきてからも人間関係が維持されるという特徴を持っていた。このため、高齢者による観光は、観光の場とは異なる新たな人間関係を形成、または再構築する可能性を高める役割を果たしていると言える。
